@MsBAM: YAY!!! So glad things worked out!! Sometimes kids just go on strike for no apparent reason. I'm glad you were able to work through it. :)

@Adira: I think the strike is over!!! Thankfully! I just kept trying and put less stress on myself and him for feedings. I would like to know what caused it but I have no idea.

@Adira: Thank you! I’ll give it a read. Really hoping it’s just his top teeth coming in.

@Adira: Ok I’ll try having my DH feed him a bottle. I know, and pumping is so hard too! I definitely do want to continue so I’ll keep trying to nurse!

@MsBAM: I have no idea, haha. You don't want to starve him, but you also want to encourage him to nurse. I'd maybe keep offering the breast, but if he continues to refuse to nurse, then you probably should give a bottle. If possible, have someone else feed him so he knows Mom = Breastfeeding. If that's not possible, definitely make sure you do paced feeding with the bottle so he doesn't think drinking from the bottle is easier and quit breastfeeding altogether. And just keep offering! Oh, and keep pumping to keep your supply up. Powering through a nursing strike is HARD, but worth it if you really want to continue nursing.

@Adira: I tried different positions, didn’t work unfortunately!!! We were just at the doctor’s for his 6m check up/shots. Doctor said he was fine and to continue to offer. Should I not be offering a bottle then if I want him to continue to nurse?

Have you tried switching positions? My LO went on a nursing strike when he had a double ear infection and laying on his side to nurse (we always did cradle hold) hurt his ears. Maybe try a different position (like football hold)? But yes, it sounds like a nursing strike. Sorry you are dealing with this! If you want to continue nursing, I'd continue to offer, but try not to push it or make it anymore stressful. Good luck. Hopefully the strike is over after a couple days. <3

Hi all,

My LO just turned 6mo. The last few days he’s been unusually fussy. I think he might be teething since everything is going in his mouth, more drool, fussiness, wanting to be held more etc. On top of that, he’s been resisting breastfeeding even when I think he’s due for a feed. As soon as I put him in position to feed he immediately starts getting upset and crying, turning his head and body away from me using all his strength. Even nursing to sleep for naps is a bit of a struggle but works eventually. That’s been pretty much the only time he will nurse now with some effort.

Does this sound like a nursing strike? It’s very unlike him. If so, what can I do? He also eats solids. I’ve read some articles on what to do. I haven’t been engorged enough to pump bc he’ll feed for a nap. Should I pump and give him a bottle to see how he reacts? Usually I can only pump about 2oz or a little more per pumping session (30-40min).
