@Ms maths: Sorry your LO is having a rough time! FWIW I traveled when mine was 13mo (3 nights) and when she was 23 mo (5 nights) and she did not lose interest. She went right back to normal when I returned. We did offer bottles at 13mo but she had nothing to replace it at 23mo.

I'm in the middle of my trip, and so far the pumping has been a breeze! My arrival airport had a family restroom with a chair for pumping (I presume) so I just pumped while I waited for my luggage. Now I'm doing it in the morning and evening, and it's totally stress-free. Thanks for all of the advice and encouragement!

Baby, on the other hand, is having a hard time :( She was experiencing significant separation anxiety before I left, and now she holds on to my husband for dear life whenever they are together. And when he tries to give her a bottle, she demands that he carry her through every room of our house. Twice. DH thinks she's looking for me  Then she will take a few sips of the bottle and reject the rest.

Yea at this point this isn't hard at all!

Pumping at the airport is your best bet. Usually there are family bathrooms or sometimes even nursing pods. If you are really brave, find a quiet corner and bring a nursing cover.

You'll want to pump enough to keep supply going and keep pain away.

I've been in this situation a few times and DD did not lose interest at all -- in fact, she was needier about it for the next few days after I got home. I mostly pumped when I got up and before I went to sleep, unless I felt uncomfortable and needed an extra session. I hate pumping in airports or on planes, so for my cross-country trips I pumped right before I left home/hotel and then as soon as I got to my destination -- it was never an issue once DD was a toddler, but I did the same even when she was younger and it was a little uncomfortable but not too bad.

@Ms maths: at that point I had stopped pumping at work, so during the week she was nursing 2-3 times a day and on weekends 5-6 times maybe? I found my supply maintained itself pretty well just pumping for comfort and bounced back fine when I got home, but I never was away for more than 48 hours...

I really think you will be fine just pumping every now and then! It's much less stressful since you don't necessarily need to keep up your supply or bring home milk.

@Ms maths: totally! the "toddler" trips I took were SO MUCH LESS stressful than the "baby" trips. It was great to not worry about scheduling in pump breaks and there was less milk to deal with on the trip home.

This is sounding much easier than I feared! (I think most of what I have read is from mothers who are more in the middle of breastfeeding, with a child still very dependent on milk, which maybe makes it more work and stress.)

I travel a fair amount for work, and the first time doing it while pumping was definitely daunting, but really not too bad. I did traveled around the time my daughter was your LO's age and she was nursing about as much as yours. I pumped when I first got up, around lunch, after work/before dinner, and then before bed. She never had any issues nursing after I returned. As far as pumping while flying, if you need to do it on the flight, I've pumped in a couple of different places on the plane. Once at my seat when everyone around me was sleeping (with a big scarf covering everything), a couple of times in the bathroom, and once the flight attendant let me sit at her seat and they pulled the curtain around, which was awesome! Good luck!

I traveled a few times after I had stopped pumping at work but was still nursing at home. LO was almost 2, 2.3, and 2.9 during those trips and we continued nursing until her 3rd bday, and she was definitely still interested when I returned each time! I took my electric pump on the first trip and just a manual on the second two trips. All three times I was pumping just morning/evening and dumping. That was plenty for me and the only time I had discomfort was with the first trip which involved an international flight so my schedule was all messed up. I had a manual pump in my bag and would have looked for a place to pump in the airport if I needed to, but by the time I was feeling uncomfortable we were en-route to our hotel so I just waited it out. Many airports do have nursing rooms which you could use to pump though, just look on the airport's website! Good luck!

@JenGirl that's such a good idea! I'm not sure I'll have enough to make it worth someone's time (I'm going to be in a somewhat remote location, so the receiver would probably have to travel to get to me) but I'm going to look into it.

@Catomdoo did that represent a major decrease in breast time for you? (That is, was your LO nursing more frequently than that at the time?) I'd like to pump as little as possible, but I'm nervous that supply will just disappear...

I just went on a work conference last week! My son's only 6 months, so he definitely was still nursing when I got home, but I overproduce, so I didn't need the milk. I got on that state's Human Milk 4 Human Babies facebook page and found a mom adopting a girl due in April that I donated my milk to. She met me in the lobby of my hotel the last night I was there and was super grateful for the milk. HM4HB can be hit or miss. My first mom flaked on me. But there are always people looking for milk. And it feels great to get to donate!

LO2 is 12.5 months and still nurses 3-4 times a day, but I stopped pumping at work a few weeks ago. And we just night-weaned  She seems to enjoy nursing quite a bit, though, so I am in no rush to end.

But, I'm going to be traveling for work soon, for 6 days. So it seems like I will need to pump while I am away if I plan to continue nursing once I get back. (I don't need the milk; my plan is to just throw it out, rather than deal with the hassle of storing and transporting it.)

Anyone else been in a similar situation?
Did you keep nursing after travel?
Was your child still interested in nursing when you got back?
If you pumped while away, how often did you do it?
If you have pumped while traveling by plane, where are the easiest places to do it? (It won't be too critical for my body when I do the pumping, I don't think; but I'm flying across country so I think I will have to do it at least once while actually traveling.)
