We were down to 2 sessions a day at 12 months and after a while it started to become painful for me (I was about 6 weeks pregnant) and we were weaned by the time she was 14 months old (so 15 weeks?) I had no interest in tandem nursing anyway.

@Dagny: I started producing colostrum, so DD got a lot of that before I went into labor. I nursed 3x a day minimum.
My preferred position has always been lying down on my side (lol. Tired mama needs rest!). I was HUGE and was fine lying down to nurse til the end. :)

My daughter was 21m when I got pregnant. My supply was already pretty minimal and we were down to about 2x a day? I had no interest in tandem nursing so over the next few months I slowly dropped the Last two sessions. I think she was weaned about 25m?

She hasn't shown an interest in nursing again and baby sister is almost 5 months.

@Dagny: Well when she was 6 months I was 3 months prego, so not exactly sure what happened. She's never lost interest in nursing so dar. In fact she sometimes nurses more now than she did as a newborn. I don't have expectations either. My babies will call the shots, so whenever she is done that works for me. Well unless she's nearing puberty lol.

@KEMMA - thanks for sharing. I'm glad to hear that the nipple pain has been manageable. I'm assuming that once your milk dried up at 17 weeks, the pain/sensitivity become more significant - is that right? good luck!

I'm 31 weeks pregnant and still nursing my 27 month old twice a day (nap and bedtime). From memory my milk dried up at around 17 weeks and I started producing colostrum about a month ago but not huge amounts.

My LO has never had a great latch so the lack of milk has definitely contributed to my sore nipples and I have up feeding on one side about two months ago. At this point the nipple pain is manageable and my lo isn't too fussed if I cut a nursing session short.

I really wasn't sure that Miss A would hang in there on the boob but I think she's far more attached to the emotional aspect rather than the nutrition which is probably something to do with her being that bit older.

I have no expectations or aims as to tandem nursing so I'm just taking each day as it comes!

@Dagny: we had a lot of talks about it before baby came. And she did ask once or twice but she didn't want to really. She just wanted mommy snuggle time.

@MAYSPROUT - kudos for continuing to nurse so long after it became problematic for you! I'm curious - did LO1 ever express any interest in nursing after LO2 arrived (if they were nursing)? I guess I have this fear that if we wean before LO2 arrives, LO1 might become interested again.

Lo1 was about 21 months when I found out I was pregnant with lo2. She was still nursing at night so we slowly cut that out since it was making me too tired. Then after the first trimester I started to get sore when I nursed her and I didn't want to tandem nurse so I talked to her about how a new baby was coming and slowly she weaned. It was around 6 months pregnant that she was pretty fully weaned.

@Dagny: I am 28 weeks and nursing my 18 month old. I haven't experienced any drop in supply or drop-off in nursing frequency. I have experienced nipple sensitivity the whole time though, and I get more "touched out" more quickly than I did before.

@NEEKIEROSE - it seems like 12 weeks is a pretty common time for supply to tank. Did your LO just lose interest after that?

I've just noticed my nipples are starting to get a little sensitive/sore. I didn't have that at all early in this pregnance, so I though it was kind of weird that it happened all of the sudden. Did anyone else experience sensitive nipples? I'm curious to know if that continues...

@ANONYSQUIRE - that's really interesting because I've heard from so many people that right around 6 months (pregnant) is when they start to be less interested in your milk because it's changing. Good luck tandem nursing! I don't really have any expectations about how long we'll continue nursing, but I think it would be so amazing to be able to experience tandem nursing.

@CHOPSUEY - Wow, so your LO1 kept nursing even though you had no supply?! Interesting. I have a feeling that could happen with my LO. My supply seems to be fairly normal so far, but I'm just hitting the 12 week mark, so we shall see. Congrats to you for tandem nursing for 8 months - that's amazing!

I'm assuming that everyone nurses lying down after a certain point right? We just had to stop nursing in the glider because it got too uncomfortable for me. :crying:

I pretty much dried up at around 12 weeks pregnant, but continued to nurse til the end of my pregnancy and tandem nursed for 8 months as well. My kids are almost 21 months apart.

Well I'm currently almost 30 weeks and nursing a 10 month old. I don't know if it's just our experience or normal but right at 6 months she stopped sleeping through the night and has been waking up multiple times to nurse at night. I think now my milk has turned to colustrum so she seems happier but still wakes up haha. But it hasn't been bad enough that I've cut her off or anything. I plan on tandem nursing so there is no end in sight!!

Good luck :)

I'm about 12 weeks pregnant with my second and am still breastfeeding my 21 month old. So far it's been going fine, but I'm curious about what I don't know. I've just been going with the flow and assuming, 'well, many women have done this before and just did whatever worked!'. What was your experience like? What did you learn?
