@jedeve: One theory being explored is that proximity to dairy farms is a big factor!

@Anagram: I get that. We did two meals plus snacks at daycare too. My LO was not a good eater either - wouldn't drink any type of milk. We saw multiple GIs and they all told us not to worry about it. Obviously you have to follow what your doc recommends though. It is all scary. I hope they figure out soon why there is so much of an increase in allergies among kids. I hate it for my own.

@ladybee: sometimes I wonder if it will take an actual court case or something before all allergies are treated equal. By equal, I just mean....daycare workers are trained in not cross-contamination procedures form foods brought from home, and kids with severe allergies are required to bring their own food and drinks from home. And daycare workers are trained in epi pen usage.

Or something. I don't know what a good solution would be.

@Anagram: thanks off topic but I think it gets to me so badly because people hear milk allergy and think he will get tummy troubles or something. Nope, he could die. Up until a month ago we avoided soy too but luckily he out grew that allergy. It's just hard because he's on a limited diet to begin with that taking something away just blows.

@ladybee: I know. I totally understand. Hopefully soon, he'll start eating better. I don't remember exactly when it was (I know it was after her 1 year birthday parties, where I remember being highly stressed because LO didn't eat *any* solids for 3-4 days straight), but at some point it was like a switch just flipped and she started EATING.

Your kiddo will get there.

@jedeve: not to pick apart what you've posted, but I just want you to see it from another person's perspective. My daughter always had breakfast, lunch, and 2 snacks at daycare because of how early I have to be at work. There are also days (sadly) when I have to work late and she also has dinner there. I know I'm not the only parent at my LOs daycare when this is the case.

So, telling a parent of a 12 month old with eating issues and their own intolerances, that they can just offer water all day and the parents can feed their child at home may not work. =)

My LO has been a really great eater this past month or so, and if she'd always been like this, I don't think I would have seen the big deal with a daycare creating these rules to limit what all kids in a class can have. But having my LO, with all her little issues and struggles, have made me see this issue very differently.

@Anagram: I'm frustrated because he's not a good eater (unless Cheerios count) and we paid $600 a month for Neocate for 8 months. We are tapped out and need to go to a cheaper option. He really liked the almond milk too which was a bonus! I emailed his nutritionist and she said that she would send 10oz of soy formula to daycare (plus it has the fats he needs) and use almond milk at home. I understand peanut and but allergies and how scary they are but M has a reaction if I've drank milk and kiss him. Yet all the kids in his school still drink milk. My child could die if he drank milk, where's the respect and consideration for that? I don't expect people to ban milk, I will make modifications and accommodations for my son. Ugh!

@jedeve: in my case, calcium was not one of my main concerns. My concern when needing a milk alternative for my LO was calories and fats. I guess I could have transitioned her to the Neocate Splash, but at the cost of that product (and the ingredients starting with corn syrup solids that I'm not a huge fan of), I wouldn't want another parent at my daycare dictating that I use something like Splash when my doctor has said almond or hemp milk will do.

@luckypenny: in some cases, kids aren't very good eaters and the milk/milk alternatives are a way to add calories and fats. If your LO has been a good eater and not a good milk drinker--that's fine. Some kids are the opposite.

My LO is MSPI and wasn't a good eater until the past month or so (she's almost 15 months). We had *so* many days from month 11-month 13 where she would hardly eat anything all day long, but would still drink hemp milk from a bottle.

I think daycares are putting parents in a difficult position by adopting these school-wide rules when in some cases there isn't even a kid with a particular allergy in a class. The other thread someone posted yesterday--when the daycare suddenly banned all seeds, nuts, peanuts (which are not nuts), wheat, dairy, soy, eggs and something else (I'm making that list up, I just remember it is a very long list). For me personally, these things have reached a tipping point. These policies need to be examined and some procedures should be put in place to protect the kid with the allergy without telling every other kid in the class what they can and can't eat.

I work in a public school (obviously older than daycare kids) and we have a ton of kids with allergies to everything under the sun and we have yet to have an issue with an allergic reaction because of an "airborne" food allergen. Only in 1 case have we ever had an issue severe enough to need a table that was "____ free" for that kid, but every other kid in the cafeteria was still able to bring what they wanted to eat from home.

Which is a position I fully support, by the way. It's required at the beginning of the year that the nurse give us the list of every student's allergies and we have students allergic to literally everything---corn, wheat, berries, melon, nuts, legumes, dairy, soy, coconut, banana, kiwi, gluten.

Is one type of allergy more important that another? Should we ban nuts and also ban all of the above?

@luckypenny: I agree.

My son has a peanut and a dairy allergy. Our GI told us milks are not necessary and there are plenty of other ways to get calcium.

Eta: we give our son almond milk, but just one cup a day with breakfast. Could you ask your dietician if at home or on weekends is sufficient enough?

While I don't think day cares or schools have to be nut free, in my case, seeing it from the nut AND the dairy allergy, I feel my son's need to not be exposed to something that can kill him is greater than his nutritional needs. Or having to wait a bit to meet those needs.

I hear you. Xander's allergic to milk too and it's annoying how milk allergies are treated. No one asks people to stop providing milk to their kids (well, besides that one daycare that came up the other day), but parents are asked to not provide other allergens. It sucks.

That said, we use hemp milk for Xander. It's the closest, nutrition-wise, to cow's milk, so I think that could be a good substitute for you instead of almond milk if your daycare ends up saying no to you.

Not to sound rude, I'm genuinely curious, what is the huge need for a "milk". There are so many other ways to get calories/calcium/nutrients that is it really a "need"? Is what they get at home truely not enough?

We drink milk alternatives since 1 but hardly more than a cup a day and my ped has never been concerned.

@ladybee: I totally understand. I'm in the same situation with paying for food, but still having to pack all my own. I can't even let my LO eat their snacks, because even though they *say* they are aware, they give the kids all different types of cheerios and I had to tell them that only the original cheerios don't have soy in them--a lot of the others do.

They had no clue. Which is why I can't trust them to give LO anything.

@ladybee: I wonder if you could make the argument that a breastfeeding baby would be allowed breast milk regardless of whether the mom was following a nut free diet and that is allowed and the staff are able to monitor and prevent reactions in that scenario. Would you be okay with offering to pack his own bottles and milk? Then the milk wouldn't be out, there'd be no possibility of the teacher serving it to others, the bottles wouldn't even go to the kitchen.

Just brainstorming for you. I hope it works out!

@Anagram: I already know if they say no I am going to be so mad. The director has handled his allergy so horribly but they teachers have been wonderful so I've stuck it out. While there are other types of alternatives we could use, this was the recommended one and I can't afford all of the options. I hope they are accommodating.

@ladybee: I had a daycare tell me my LO could not have almond milk at school. I was pretty livid--in the end, I transitioned her to hemp milk, but I feel like the whole nut-free thing has started encroaching on other children's nutritional needs. My little sister is severely allergic to tree nuts (not peanuts, which are legumes and not nuts) and she never went to a nut free school. Our house wasn't even nut free.

I asked if there were any kids in the infant class with a nut allergy and they said no. But that nut allergies are common to it's just a school wide rule because they'd had previous parents of kids with nut allergies who complained and wanted a whole nut free school.

I do wonder if at some point, there will be any kind of legal court case over this. If my doctor recommends almond milk (say, my child is allergic to hemp and coconut, and rice isn't nutritious and also has the arsenic issue), then whose child's nutrition is more important? The kid in the 4 year old room with the nut allergy, or my LO who needs a "milk" and this is the only one she can use, you know?

These days, half of every class has an allergy to something--dairy, wheat, strawberries, melon, corn, nuts, legumes...you can't just eliminate *all* those things from *every* kids' diet.

@ladybee: I think all you can do is ask. I don't know, though if the policy is strict.

DS is severely allergic to milk and dairy. Our nutritionist has recommended transitioning him over to almond milk now that he is almost 1 year old. Our daycare is nut free (tree nuts, peanut butter, etc.)

Do you think this will be a problem? I don't even know what to do if they say no because it was what was recommended for him and I'm going to do whats best for my son.
