@pinkcupcake: I just took my DD who is 3 this past weekend. It was just our town's version so not super professional but it was 2 hours long. She did great in terms of being quiet / sitting still, but I think she was pretty bored / almost asleep by the end, it's a LONG time of all dancing and no words! I think she liked it but I probably wouldn't have gone to a more expensive production at this age (we only had to pay $18 since she sat on my lap).

@regberadaisy: is it new? Or are you thinking of the one where Daniel has to fill in for prince Wednesday because he's sick? (I can't believe I'm having this conversation). C is really into that episode right now but we've had it on the dvr for a while.

I just was offered free tickets to a family friendly production of the nutcracker, so I think we are going to take my almost 2.5 year old, realizing now there is a very good chance we will leave at intermission. But I'm wondering if it's just a bad idea all around this young. She has never even say through a whole movie at home.

Plus I don't want to get her too excited since it happens a week before my due date so we may be in the hospital or home with a newborn by then anyway...

I'd try to go, if she is pretty good about sitting still - just try to get an aisle seat and let her get some energy out at intermission. Sometimes places will offer a Nutcracker tea, which is aimed at younger kids. It's basically a tea/cookie party but the dance company performs the famous scenes, so maybe you could see if one of those if offered for another option to try.

We went at that age and she did great! It was also a local production matinee and there were tons of kids so I would go for it.

We are going this weekend with LO, who is 3.5. LO takes ballet lessons and is very serious about it (as serious as a 3 year old can be, but more serious than her classmates) and she has sat quietly through movies and the symphony live a couple of times. I started going with my mom to the ballet around 4 too, and behaved myself. For a matinee, I wouldn't worry too much, I'm sure you guys won't be the only family there!

We're going to try one (DS just turned 3) because a friend is in it. Luckily, she's a party girl, so it's near the beginning. We're sitting on an aisle, and have no problem leaving if he gets antsy. He doesn't really have an interest in ballet, but he loves his friend!

Sounds like fun! M will be 3 next week and takes ballet but I think I'll hold off a bit for her. She was kind of squirmy during Sesame Street Live ;).
But really looking forward to taking her to Lincoln Center to see the ballet in a few years!

@pinkcupcake: plus there's always intermission to get out a little pent up energy if necessary! Even as an adult, the second half is my favorite :-) Sounds like she would enjoy it!

@MrsSCB: thanks! she's taken a few months of ballet (although at this age, it's more of her just running around in circles) and loves watching dancers. i think she'll enjoy the scenery and costumes - and it's the Nutcracker!!!! My most favorite part of the holidays :)

@jlm22: nah, not too super expensive - I think for 3 of us, it would be around $50? So definitely affordable and I wouldn't feel bad about leaving in the middle of it if she couldn't handle it (but I'd be bummed b/c I love Nutcracker! Haha). And yes, it's a matinee at 2PM so I'm sure most of the other patrons would be younger...

I've gone to the Nutcracker every year with my mom since about that age (just went the day after thanksgiving last week :-) ) so I say it's doable. I was taking ballet by then, though, and very into it. Does she seem to enjoy dancing or watching dancers? I would say a matinee is a good bet -- I always see lots of little kids of all ages when we go to a matinee.

Are tickets expensive? I bet a matinee show would be full of families and probably not super quiet!

I'm holding off a few years for our 3.5 year old, despite her wanting to be a ballerina, lol. My reasoning is she can sit through a movie, but if she gets fussy or talkative, the sound at the movies will drown her out for the other paying customers. At the ballet, I assume it's a bit quieter.

Do you think 3.5 years is too young to sit through a 2 hour Nutcracker ballet? It's by a local ballet company so not super fancy and not a huge theatre. She's pretty good about sitting still but I wonder if 2 hours might be too hard for her.
