We suspected that our LO had a mild dairy intolerance. So I pretty much illuminated all dairy from my diet and I gave him nutrimagen as a supplement and he seems to tolerate it well. Our insurance did not cover it but enfamil does offer rebates for them, make sure you download the rebate form first before purchasing the formula because you have to buy the formula within 30 days of downloading the form. If you purchase before you downloaded the rebate form it will not be valid. See if you pediatrician can give you samples, ours gave us a bunch. Insurance covered 70% once we hit our deductible. They covered 100% once we hit our out of pocket max. We thankfully, or not so thankfully, had already hit our deductible and out of pocket max (5k-whoof!) thanks to his birth and a hospital visit for fever at 6 weeks, by the time he started the Elecare at 7 weeks. So ours was covered 100%. Within 4 days she started eating awake! It was seriously a godsend. It still took a long time for her to take a bottle more normally (and she never really took it FULLY normally), probably because of the psychological damage of associating eating with pain. But it got her eating awake and willingly again so it worked IMO. </p> <p>Insurance did not cover it for us (in Ohio they don't have to). The two cheapest places to find it were amazon and target. I monitored prices at both. Target runs sales on the 19oz cans every few weeks where if you buy 2 or 3 you get a $10 gift card. That was generally the best price if you caught the sale. Target also runs sales every month or so where if you spend something like $120 on baby stuff you get $20 gift card. And you can stack those. Nutramigen made his skin issues and throwing up the worst it had ever been so neither worked for him. We ended up on Neocate. I quit dairy and continued to BF but ultimately put him on nutramigen at 4.5 months when it was clear that he was still having issues on breastmilk (occasional blood in stool if I so much as had a whiff of dairy). Then we did Nutramigen for another 2-3 weeks until we weaned back to breast milk. Our ped had him on it because she wanted to calm his system down and help get his new reflux medication to kick in without any possible foreign irritants. She said she didn't think he had a milk protein allergy, but that perhaps something in my milk was bothering him. So while he was on Nutramigen I went on a total elimination diet (I had been off dairy for weeks already at this point) and pumped/froze everything to try and give him later on once he'd outgrown the reflux. It DID help him. He didn't eat as well or as much at first (warning, it is the most disgusting tasting thing EVER) but once he got use to it he was a ton better within about 5 days. After the full 2 week course she said we could try introducing 1 bottle of "clean" breast milk a day and see how he tolerated it and within 2 weeks we were pretty much back on breast milk and 1 bottle of sensitive/gentle milk-based formula for supplementation a day.
