@Pirouette: hi there, how are you guys? So after that illuminating comic from last week about the mental load, I sent my husband links to all the car seats we discussed on this board, and a link to Lucies list, and told him to deal with it ✌🏼Great to know you liked the combi, our baby is heee-huge, so not sure how long he could stay in it, but certainly easier than getting a new car :)

@LCTBQE: the combi has been great for both my kids - we have 2 in my husband's smaller car and both kids love it. Only negative is it doesn't have the higher forward facing limits of some of the other seats, so it's not a forever seat like some of them out there. my plan was to use it for the second kid when my first outgrew it, but my first loved it and is small, so it will actually be the only car seat she needs probably before she switches to a booster. I loved the combi in the city because i could put it in the basket of the vista for trips!

We are in nyc don't own a car, but often leave our car seats in a friend's car. I think most the cars in our neighborhood have car seats in them. I've never worried about it. We have a clek fllo and a UPPAbaby Mesa right now. Moving them is a pain.

Hi, I totally dropped the ball on this thread, sorry about that and thank you everyone for weighing in!

@oliviaoblivia: @Littlebit7: @Pirouette: got it, the main reason I was interested in the fllo was because I was erroneously under the impression it was small front-back. I'm going to get the cosco or the combi, thank you for this. is the combi just more comfortable for longer trips? also yayyy to not $400, clek is not fooling around with that pricing.

@PinkElephant: jelly shoes?! is it possible people thought they were stoop freebies, like how we put our used books out for grabs? just wanting to believe in humanity here for a second... gah.

@Trailmix: ugh, that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. I've also always been super uptight about leaving absolutely nothing in the car for that reason, but I'm not sure we have a choice here :meh: it just doesn't sound practical to me to think I'm going to uninstall and re-install this thing with baby in tow every time I go anywhere.

@shortcake: @KatieBklyn: just what I needed to know, thank you so much, ladies! and haha/ugh about the loose change--someone at work who lives in Queens told me she just had a small book of CDs stolen. WHY.

I was a public defender in Brooklyn for over a decade and never once heard of someone stealing a car seat. People tend to steal things that have fast resale value, and while fancy strollers might fit the bill, fancy car seats do not. Loose change in the console, on the other hand - kiss that goodbye!

@LCTBQE: hi!! I would imagine it would be difficult to steal car seats in NYC - they are heavy and tough to lug around. I have the combi cocorro and love it. We have a small car and it's super easy to take in and out of the car when necessary. And great for travel!

So I was in Philly visiting my sister and my car was broken into. I think they got my old GPS unit in my glove compartment but left the two pairs adidas sneakers I bought the day before and a Diono car seat. Whoever broken into my car missed out on some goods.

I'm in Boerum hill and leave both seats in the car all the time without worry. Plus I've never heard of car seats ever being targeted. Break ins usually happen because they see something else they want.

@LCTBQE: former Park Slope mama here. You run a higher risk of theft of anything from your car if you drive a beater bc people assume it doesn't have an alarm. But car seat theft from the car is not a thing. Anything you leave unattended on a brownstone stoop for more than ten seconds, however....that's another story entirely. We've had jelly shoes and kids water bottles (half full!) go missing while we carry things in!!!

@Littlebit7: @Anagram: we have quite a few road trips planned (like upstate/shelter island/ithaca kind of stuff) and travel by plane maybe twice a year. would you guys still recommend the cosco seat? other consideration is our car is TINY and we are both really tall and need the seats pushed back quite a bit--that's the real reason I was going to get the fllo, I just heard it was good for small spaces. thank you for your thoughts!

@LCTBQE: It's interesting, the thefts at first (in different parts of town) were thought to be just kids messing around. But then there have been reports of vans in the area and basically what happens is they case the area, see who leaves the cars unlocked and then they clean out the car. They take everything. If the cars are locked, they move on.

I think part of the problem is that its the burbs and people think that crime doesn't happen here, but it does.

@LCTBQE: Brooklynite here! It doesn't happen. We leave both seats in the car. I'm paranoid about a lot of things and this hasn't crossed my mind.

Honestly, I think they are too heavy, too hard to take out and there isn't a market. There's barely a market to sell secondhand ones legit.

They'd quicker break your window for diapers. Those have great resale value! I know a guy.

Hmm...Stolen strollers are big business in our town, but I've never heard of a break in just for a car seat. So I think you are safe. We have a garage space, but usually street park because we give our nanny the garage space (she's not a resident and can't street park for more than 4 hours), so it's easier for me to just park on the street when I get home--we have a Foonf and a Diono Radian and have never had an issue.

But in your situation, if you don't drive that much.....just get a lightweight Cosco Scenara or Combi Coccoro, so you can take it in and out of seats or travel with it easily.

My younger two are still pretty little though, they still have time to grow those opinions! We turned my four year old forward facing a couple months ago and just today my two year old was very interested in that seat. I'm not sure if it was the color or the direction. She still happily went into her own seat once prompted though.

@SweetiePie: yeah, it's a good point about the uninstalling and lugging the huge thing around, and shit-bag familiarity with $$$ kid gear. we actually live on the same block as our police precinct and a couple of our neighbors keep their UB strollers out unlocked in front our their brownstones--but I just see broken car window glass on other blocks that we frequently are relegated to parking on often enough that I wonder what it is that's getting stolen. sounds like in the kid category it's more strollers than car seats.

@oliviaoblivia: damn, haha! do they fight over who gets the pink ones? I found the aqua one on sale, it's cute but I'm sure they're destined to become disgusting :)

@LCTBQE: look at the Cosco scenera next. Do you use your car that much anyway? It would be totally safe and fine for your regular seat too. It only weighs about 8 lbs so it's awesome for planes. But the straps can be annoying so if you are in and out of the car often it might not be a good primary seat

In NYC (UES) and this has never occurred to me. I've never heard of it.
I also think it's super unlikely that a thief would want to break a window (potentially drawing attention) and steal something that will take minutes to uninstall and then lug a huge seat hoping no one sees them. I also doubt a lowlife knows what a Clek is :-) Like that it's expensive.

I would think they want to do a quick search for electronics and cash and then bolt as fast as they can. A car seat wouldn't be fast or easy. But this is all my theory.

Bottom line, I wouldn't be worried.

Thank you for weighing in, everyone--sounds like mostly don't worry about it but that it definitely is common some places. I'm going to talk to a few parents in my neighborhood and see what they think (which would I suppose necessitate my making real life friends?)

@Aria: great to know! can I ask which neighborhood you used to live in?

@Littlebit7: are you in the city, or BK? also aghhh what's a travel convertible? do you have one?

@oliviaoblivia: whoa that is a lot of wine $ spent on car seats. just for fun, which colors did you get?

@Mrs. Microscope: @looch: @Freckles: that sucks, guys :meh: so what do people do if they don't have a garage, just suffer broken windows and jacked shit all of the time? is it really unrealistic to think you'll uninstall the carseat and put it in your trunk or something every time? that sounds impossible with your kid in tow.

@Pollywog: wow, I'm surprised! I grew up in Mount Pleasant and anything that wasn't nailed down disappeared over night. glad to hear it's getting better :)

@newlypregnantlady: great idea, thanks. we just have geiko so not super optimistic they'd be helpful, but I will try. I'd hate to set myself up to be a sitting duck, but not sure if we have much of a choice.

Call your insurance because they may cover the cost of your car seat if it gets stolen (I was thinking maybe my renters insurance??). I haven't had this happen to me but I've heard others talk about them being covered. Because car seats are easily $200-300 it makes sense that insurance would hopefully cover them.
