We would always feed a bottle or nurse first, then wait an hour to offer oatmeal. We didn't make it as soupy as the directions recommended and he was okay with the texture. After a couple weeks, we started to use less milk to make it thicker.

We spoon fed LO 30 mins after her bottle/nursing session with warmed BM and the oatmeal was really soupy at first.

@Alivoo01: I just poured some in from what I pumped that day at work. We started at like 530 once we got home from day care. So it was probably 1-2 hours after her last bottle. I can't remember when she was eating then. Then she would nurse right before bed at 630.

It was more liquid when we first started but it did seem to confuse her. She liked it better when it was thicker.

@Alivoo01: When we started, I would nurse first, then an hour later, offer cereal. I warmed up the milk first and then mixed the cereal. I started with just a couple tsp of milk and maybe 1/2 - 1 tsp of cereal. I wanted to make sure it was pretty liquidy, but still identifiable as a "solid" haha.

our pediatrician recommended offering the cereal after nursing/bottle so that the primary source of nutrition was bm/formula (although honestly at the very start they're eating so little by spoon that it probably doesn't matter too much).

i think i let the bm/cereal mixture sit at room temp for a few minutes to take the chill off. also, because i didn't want to waste breastmilk, most of the time i used formula to mix in with the cereal.

we offered the cereal mixture a couple of times a day. then daycare started asking for purees/cereal, so i sent in two servings a day (puree mixed with cereal). he seemed to always finish with no problem so i increased the amount over time.

@edelweiss: @Smurfette: Did y'all warm up some breastmilk then mix it or did you express milk just before mixing? After feeding them, do you nurse? Or do you mind sharing your schedule? I'm completely lost!

we fed it by spoon--the first week i mixed 1 TBS of oatmeal cereal with about 3 to 4 TBS of breastmilk or formula. it's very slow at first and he didn't finish all of it. but it was good to get him used to the idea of eating (as opposed to nursing/drinking bottles). after about a week i started mixing the oatmeal cereal with purees instead of liquid because i felt that he could handle it.

I've also read not to put it in a bottle, so we're planning to spoon feed. We haven't started yet, though...probably closer to 6 months. I am not sure about the amount. I think in the beginning you're only supposed to give a tiny amount each day?

We only ever spoon fed cereal and never put cereal in a bottle. They suggest to make it soupy in the beginning until LO gets used to the texture and doesn't gag.

DS's pedi suggested we start serving DS oatmeal when he's 5 months old and solids at 6 months. I'm reading up on it and the Gerber website states they do not recommend putting the cereal in a bottle, and that it should be spoon fed. Is this correct? What did you do?

Serving recommendation is 1 tbs of oatmeal for 5 tbs of "milk". So how much oatmeal should I be giving?
