0 out of 0 found this helpful
I am posting this to offer some hope to others dealing with this rare and heart-wrenching condition. At 11+6, our baby showed an enlarged bladder of 13.2 mm. The doctors diagnosed this as megacystis and gave us a grim prognosis. My wife underwent CVS, FISH, and microarray to see if there was a chromosomal component. The results of FISH came back 4 days later, clearing our baby of trisomy 13, 18 and 21, which are those most commonly associated w/megacystis. That was relieving but still, our baby had a huge bladder. The literature was sparse and depressing, and there really are only 2 studies out there of credible size and utility (Liao 2003 and Girard 2017). The gist was that if chromosomes aren't an issue, and the bladder is less than 15mm, there is a 90% chance of spontaneous resolution. We insisted on an ultrasound a week after CVS instead of the standard 2 weeks. Miraculously, our baby's bladder was back to normal, we could barely even see it on the ultrasound. KEEP THE HOPE!

@HabesBabe: Everything you're saying sounds like this is merely an odd finding, but if it progressed to anything serious, you should find out gender. It's posterior urethral valves that is the concern in the back of people's minds, and that only affects boys.

Thanks everyone, for your kind words and positive thoughts :) We went back for the follow-up U/S on Friday and spoke to the OB in the office (ours had the day off). She said the bladder is still "prominent" (which is smaller than "grossly enlarged," the next classification up I guess?) and it's too early at this point to comment on the kidneys. We're just going to do the anatomy scan at the hospital rather than the OB office since they have a perinatologist there on U/S days.

I guess it's good news that the OB hadn't told us to get a CVS or amnio when the time is right...? So we'll just have to wait and see. I'm super showing so we're still telling friends and family that we're expecting. Just hoping that everything turns out OK and we have a healthy baby.

@twoofeverything: glad you had a positive outcome! Thanks for sharing :) Did they just track it the whole time? Do you remember the measurements by any chance?

@Espion: don't know the sex yet (we might be team green like we were with LO#1) so we asked the tech not to say anything last week. I heard it's more common in boys, though?

@HabesBabe: 10 mm is classified as mild, but also well within the margin of error for ultrasound. Remember, it is an imprecise technique! They cannot tell you anything based on one measurement (which is why they need you to come back). An enlarged bladder in isolation cannot tell you one way or another about the kidneys yet.

ETA: do you know if you are having a boy or girl? It is too early to tell on ultrasound, but some people get that blood test (I can't remember what it is called).

@Espion: thanks so much for weighing in :) yes, i spoke with the OB yesterday for a bit after calling back to ask the nurse for more info. He said that the bladder was slightly enlarged (10mm) and that the "norm" was 7mm or less. He did say that most of these cases caught early on end up clearing up on their own (the bladder drains on its own, so whatever blockage was there is gone, or the imaging showed something that wasn't), but that we would discuss more when the follow-up ultrasounds come back.

aaaaaand of course, my f/u is on a Friday, and no one's in the office, so i'll have to wait until the following Monday to hear anything at the earliest! Just trying to stay positive and staying away from Google for sure.

@Espion: I just don't see enough comments on fetal bladders to have a sense of how likely this is to be real. It is so much more common to hear about kidney issues... Thanks for weighing in!

I don't have experience with the bladder specifically, but I received a phone call after our anatomy scan that our baby's stomach appeared to be smaller than expected, and they were concerned that the esophagus and stomach had never connected. After a worrisome week or so, I got another ultrasound and everything was fine, and the problem was pretty much chalked up to the tech being inexperienced/making an error.

Fingers crossed that yours is absolutely nothing too!

@Mrs. Jacks: My spidey senses were tingling!

@HabesBabe: They said the baby's bladder was large? Did they say anything about the kidneys? I know I can't tell you not to worry about this, but it sounds like they gave you zero information. Ultrasound is an imperfect imaging tool, because it depends a lot on the technician's skill. What one person may see as a problem, another will change the angle and realize that it is nothing at all. I'll pray that it is truly nothing. The "what ifs" are far too many to map out and would only be cause for worry. (Stay away from google, mama!)

@mediagirl: From what I read (for the 10 minutes of Dr. Google before I burst into tears), they have you come back in two weeks so that they can see if the bladder decreases in size on its own (horray!) or if it remains enlarged/gets bigger.

The latter, of course, isn't good news-- either the kidneys are failing, or there's a chromosomal abnormality, and the baby would need in utero surgery (if it's even "fixable" at the size its at) or the baby doesn't end up making it... so all we can do at this point is wait until Nov 1 (of COURSE I'm traveling for work and won't be home until after 2 weeks from my initial U/S) and see how everything goes from there.

hi all... we had our 1st tri u/s on Tuesday and the nt measurement was good, bloodwork came back good, but i got a callfrom the nurse today saying my ob was.concerned about the baby's bladder and wanted me to come infor another u/s in two weeks.

of course, i started googling and read up on enlarged fetal bladders and what it could lead to... and started to freak out. Does anyone have any experience with this? sorry for the terrible spelling/grammar... onmy phone.
