They assigned me to one within my medical group when I found out I was pregnant. I ended up really liking her, so I stuck with her.

@ohapostrophe: I am jealous! It sounds like the best of both worlds. Midwife care in the birth center.. and if that doesn't suit you just head over to the hospital.

@hotpink: my midwife practice has an in-office birth center (a suite of rooms adjacent to their exam rooms/office) or you can deliver with them in the hospital (connected by tunnel to their office)

@MsMini: Oh, haha, I didn't realize that you worked with the OB's/LDR nurses! At least you'll know who'll be able to provide you with the best care ;) And it's kinda like being surrounded by friends, right?

@hotpink: It is convenient, but there is also a "cost" to it. I work with all the OB's/LDR nurses/maternity nurses every day ... so you really have no privacy, and I think it will be weird with your co-workers so involved in your birth!

I have finally set up some meeting so hopefully I will pick my care provider soon! In the next few weeks I am meeting with an OB, a group of Midwives who work in a hospital, and some home birth Midwives. Keeping my option open! Haha :)

@redboots: Mind if I ask where you are planning to deliver with your Midwives? I am leaning towards a Midwife, and my local options include Midwives in a hospital setting, Midwives at a birth center, or Midwives at home birth.

@ohapostrophe: I am also curious where your Midwives practice out of.

@chopsuey119: unmarried OB, haha, that would have never crossed my mind. But it makes sense that someone single/without a family would have more time to devote to their practice!

@MsMini: Working in the same hospital you're going to deliver at sounds so convient.

@mediagirl: This is my exact problem. I am almost 6 weeks. Too early to start asking friends for who to go to. I think i've been having pretty good success with reading reviews on yelp.

We had JUST moved from SF to Seattle when I got pregnant. I had NO idea who to choose and with no friends in Seattle to ask, I turned to our healthcare insurance provider directory and Yelp. I identified physicians who fit my criteria (female, licensed for xx years, etc.) and then put their name into Yelp to see what kind of reviews pulled up. It turned out really well - I love my new OB and feel a good connection with her.

Good luck!

I have military health, so I didn't have a choice. I told my PCP I was pregnant and she forwarded me to the NP at the OB clinic.

My OB is also my GYN. It's an amazing practice, all the nurses and doctors are caring and honest. So, it was an easy decision to stay with them for the OB part.

My ob is my gynecologist. I've been going there since I was 19. There are 5 women in the group though so I couldn't pick who I got when I went into labor, it's whoever is on call. They make sure you see everyone throughout your pregnancy so they all know you and you know them.

I asked my OB a few questions about having a natural birth and was surprised that she was not supportive. Then I looked into the c-section rate of the practice (38%) and decided to look elsewhere. Tried a midwife practice and asked the same questions with much better answers. I switched at 27 weeks.

I looked for an OB who delivered at the hospital where I want to deliver. That was the worst part, you can't tell anyone you're pregnant that early so how do you get references?? Thankfully I later found out everyone I know who lives near us went to these doctors, too. :-)

I looked up OBs in my insurance plan online, then looked up reviews for some of them. She had good reviews, along with the office as a whole. We liked her at my initial appointment at 7wks so I've stuck with her. I'm not too picky though...I just wanted to feel comfortable with her and feel that I was in good hands.

It was easy for us once we met our midwives, I felt like they were my second moms! I am totally grateful to them for really allowing me to experience this great journey. They took really good care of us and guided us through the whole experience.

I went to my OB before I got pregnant for an annual pap. I guess he was my GYN at the time ;)
I really liked him. He's super educated, gentle, nice, took the time to explain things to me and answered all my questions. I actually just did a google search and found him. Totally hit the jackpot since his office is 5 minutes from my house.
So when I got pregnant, it was just natural for me to go to him. I also liked that he was not married because that meant he'd be more available, wouldn't be on vacation when I went into labor, etc. He owns his own practice and is the only OB on staff!
