Assuming it's breastmilk, I've never had a problem when I haven't pumped at exactly the same time as the baby was eating. So as long as she is pumping some other time during the day to account for that feed, my experience would say it's fine.

If it's formula, that could eventually be an issue. Depends on how her supply is and how long you do it for.

If it's formula then yes over time her body will regulate to not have that "need" any more.

Have you thought about nursing in bed? If you want to help, maybe you get the baby from the crib/for, bring to momma to nurse, and then you take baby to be rocked back in the room.

We did the same thing. Starting around 2 weeks my husband gave her a bottle of pumped milk in the middle of the night most nights so I could get a 4-5 hour stretch of sleep. I pumped for a few minutes after each feeding to get the milk for that bottle (and eventually build a stash for going back to work). My supply was totally fine, and we ended up breastfeeding for 16 months. Oh, and the nights when he didn't give her a bottle I was able to feed her. Maybe not as much as she would have gotten otherwise, but enough to get her to go back to sleep.

Yes, it would affect supply at that time if it was formula. My body definitely had a clock and got used to when baby needed milk and when baby didn't need milk.

I think that yes, it's basically the same as your wife dropping a feeding - her body will know that she's not expected to make milk until 5am (or whatever). If you did it maybe every other night it would probably be ok, but if you're pretty consistently giving a bottle of formula then it will affect her supply at that time of night.

I think it would effect her supply in that time frame like you mentioned. But if you or her are willing to keep up the bottle, that's ok. Or the baby will soon sleep longer anyways so it won't matter. That's my thoughts, anyway.

@CedarMagnolia: Is the bottle you are feeding formula or breastmilk?

If it is formula it could be problematic if she is not nursing and not pumping to replace the feed but it really depend on her supply. For me dropping a night feed would decrease my supply, especially when my daughter was young.

If it is breastmilk I assume she is pumping at some other time during the day to make the bottle in which case she is maintaing her supply and her body would be able to adjust if she needs to feed at an "unusual" time

Hi there, wondering if anyone can help with a feeding question I can't seem to answer with google?

My wife almost exclusively breastfeeds. The only exception is a bottle which I give our 3-month old each night at around 12-1am.

I feel like we've got a good system going, which allows us both to get some uninterrupted sleep, but my wife is worried that by giving the bottle, she will lose her supply at that time in the night so that if there was no bottle one night, she would not be able to feed the baby properly because her body had grown used to the "no milk needed between 10pm-3am" schedule.

We know in general if you express less your supply will decrease, but is it as "time-sensitive" as this? Does anyone else have experience with doing one bottle per day, but not being a slave to it, for instance not doing bottle at weekends?

Thanks in advance!
