Mine are 3 years apart and we just went with the roller board attachment (and we live in a city with no car). It has been totally fine. Now that he's 3.5, he's really not even that interested in the stroller and would rather ride the roller board, his scooter or even walk. He actually is starting to be able to walk a few kms before getting tired.

My boys are a month shy of being 3 years apart and we have a double, one full size single with an attached step board, and an umbrella stroller. I use the double side-by-side when we travel so it's easier to go through the airports and both boys can sit when they are tired. The full size we use when I know size is an issue so my oldest can still stand. However, he is getting heavy so I might buy a buggy board type of attachment for the umbrella stroller. I think that might be your best bet. Baby Jogger sells a "glider board" that attaches to their strollers for toddlers to stand on.

It might be beyond what you want to spend but what about selling your city mini and buying a stroller that has a rumble seat? You can simply use it as a single most of the time and then pop the extra seat on when you need it.

@bhbee: I like the way it looks too. I saw it at the zoo once and stared at it because it looked really sleek and not bulky and just stylish (I saw it in yellow and if I got one, I'd get all black). Anyway- there is a good review here: http://www.realmomreviews.net/2012/04/contours-optima-tandem-stroller/
This lady says the canopy can be heightened! So, she has her 3 yr old in it just fine. She also talks about the great fit that infant seats can get on this stroller.
Here's a pic from her review if you don't want to read it:

We were looking at doubles at BRU a few weeks ago, and a really nice woman stopped us. She had two young kids with her.

She said they bought a double whn her son was born (six months) and have never once used it. She said they either take two strollers (her and her husband) or she baby wears & pushes the stroller, or her oldest (four now) wants to walk & not be in the stroller.

At the very least, it made us stop and think. Our kids will be three years apart, too, and I certainly won't have any use for a stroller this winter. If anything, we will consider one next spring but by then, our oldest will be 3.5 and it's unlikely she'd want to sit in one. We haven't used a stroller in a year. She walks through the whole zoo!

@CupQuakeWalk: I like the look of this one a lot but worried whether the seat would be too small for a tall 3 year old? any experience?

My sister likes her city mini double for her boys who are 3 years apart. She also uses the glider board with her uppababy a lot. It's probably 50/50 split between the two. I personally wouldn't spend tons on a double for that age gap. Contours is coming out with a new double next month. I have the bliss and love it. I love the mountain buggy duet, too but have only tested it in stores.

Maybe the Joovy Sit and Stand? Not sure if there's an infant seat attachment for that one tho...

@Boogs: that is the perfect stroller except for the $$! I wish we could find it used, too. My LOs will be 2.5yrs apart minimum (not pregnant yet), so there is no way I'd pay full price.

I like the Contours Options enough (meaning enough to take to the zoo and on the not so common occasion of using a double).

What about a skateboard attachment for LO1? Here it is- http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00318CLAK?pc_redir=1406444015&robot_redir=1

You can also baby wear and let LO 1 sit in the stroller. Or you could find something on craigslist. I think you can get by without a double since they are already 3+ years apart.

We are in your same boat and we are heavily considering the Mountain Buggy Duet, but we want to try and find it used. We also haven't found any stores that actually have one to play with, so it's all from looking at other models and reading reviews online.

Definitely interested to hear what other strollers are recommended to you because I wouldn't mind considering other options!

kids will be exactly 3 years apart and I am starting to think about strollers. we have a city mini we used a TON living in Boston and I plan to use that most of the time with 1 kid walking or in the carrier as it makes sense. after moving to Dallas we already don't use the stroller much for the older LO.

however I'd like to get a double for things like the zoo, the airport, a long walk, things like that. don't want to invest too much since it wouldn't be heavily used.

any recommendations? is it worth getting something that will hold an infant car seat + a big kid? that stage seems so short, but the weather here will be better for long walks at that age too.

thanks for your help!
