My son has broken out in hives a few times - I've taken him to the doctor twice and brought it up at one of his well-child visits. It's usually been just after he ate and always just a skin reaction (no wheezing, coughing, vomiting). Every time the dr has said they don't think it's a food allergy and I haven't noticed any pattern. The last doctor I talked to said if I felt like there was a pattern of a certain food to try cutting it out for a bit, but he suspected in my son's case that it was probably pollen.

DS had this happen at the end of a very mild cold. They tested for strep because hives are common in kids with strep, but he tested negative. His ped said that it was most likely an effect of the virus he had. They went away after about a week.

I just had a week of horrific hives, and I'm almost certain it was from something outside, like a plant or pollen. My doctor said they can literally be caused by anything from food to plants to detergents or lotions. And it may only happen once and then never again. He said that if it keeps happening, I'll need to be allergy tested, but most likely, I'd never know what caused them.

I'd give your LO bendryl or zyrtec if they're bothering her, and keep a record of what she's eating in case they keep coming back.

We had this happening (along with randomly vomiting) and decided to do a food journal to figure out the source. It was apparent what was causing it within a week and we were able to eliminate it from his diet.

He was allergy tested later and the allergy was confirmed.

DD got hives for the first time I noticed about a week or two ago on her back and legs. They showed up and disappeared relatively quick (within a couple hours). It happened again last week after eating a smoothie but on her shoulder and made her arm swell slightly. Disappeared in an hour or so, and then also happened again yesterday. I'm thinking they're caused by tomato sauce and/or strawberries.

They don't seem to be bothering her when it happens but it does kind of bother me. WWYD? Make a ped appt or more wait and see approach?
