@buffalove: He was 11lbs2oz at 2 months, so now at 3 months he's probably around 12.5lbs or so. Thanks--I know I'm probably being silly! :)

ps - how much does he weigh? my ped had told me once they hit 11-ish pounds, they can generally sleep through the night.

I think if he was really hungry at 4:30, there's no way he would have gone another 2 hours. Don't feel guilty, he's growing and learning to sleep longer :)

So I tried this last night--he actually slept from 7:30 to 4:30, and I gave him a paci, and he went back to sleep until 6:30, I gave him a paci, and then he woke up again at 6:45 so I fed him. But now I feel guilty that I didn't feed him at 4:30! Am I being silly, or should I have fed him that first time? I figured if he was really hungry he would wake up again or not take the paci at all, but what if he's one of those kids that lets themselves be soothed even when they are hungry?? (obviously now I'm thinking of worst case scenarios and feeling like I starved my child, lol).

We always offer Nolan a pacifer after his normal last feeding. Most of the time the pacifer puts him right back out. When he is truely hungry he spits the pacifer right back out. He is gaining weight just fine so the doctor gave us the go ahead.

@hilsy85: Even with a growth spurt possibility id still offer the paci- if he's really hungry he won't take it or he'll spit it out fast!

It could be a growth spurt but even then I would still offer the paci first. If he's extra hungry he will spit it out. If not, he will just shift his calories to daytime and eat more then (that's the ideal situation!). Sounds like you have an awesome little sleeper on your hands though!

@Running Elley: yay! Hopefully E maybe drops one of his night feeds! I guess it could be a growth spurt...? I feel like he's never really experienced one before (or at least there have been no changes that I've noticed...). In that case, should I be feeding him at every wake because he needs the extra calories?

I definitely think it's okay to offer the paci first... Especially for that first feeding. Elliot consistently wakes up at almost those exact same times and each time he's convinced that he's starving but I found that if I take the bottle and replace it with a paci after he's eating even just half an ounce he'll go back down. I've been decreasing the amount I feed him so hopefully eventually he'll realize that he doesnt really need to eat yet. The point is, they're definitely old enough to last longer!

Could L just be going through a growth spurt since he was sleeping through before?

i've been doing this since very early on which i think helped contribute to her sleeping through the night at ~7.5 weeks. I kind of followed the moms on call method and i do it up to 3 times before i feed. but i can tell when she's hungry when she won't take the paci or keeps spitting it out so then i'll just feed her. now she sleeps about 9-6:30. half the time she wont wake up for the paci, but some nights she'll wake up once or twice for it and then will sleep another 2-4 hours.

I agree with @travelgirl1. At 9-ish weeks my LO started waking more than his usual so we started offering the paci first when he woke at 12/1 am. He would always fall back asleep for another 2-3 hours and I would feed him at his next waking. About half the time he would sleep through that first waking until 3/4 am.

@travelgirl1: That's what I was thinking, that he would spit it out if he was really hungry. @chrispygal: when did you start doing this?

Yes! I think this is one of the reasons LO slept through the night so early on. She would wake, but if given the paci she would go back down. She was big enough that she didn't need to eat at night. As long as he is growing and his weight is fine, I would definitely do the paci. It took a few weeks but before long she was sleeping through the night with no issues. Every now and again she might wake and fuss, and the paci still puts her right back asleep.

LO is 3 months old, and before the last week, he's been consistently sleeping 7-3 or 4, sometimes 5, and then down again til 7/730. The last week, he's been waking up twice, usually between 1 and 3, and then again between 5 and 6, and then he's up for the day at 645. Last night, he was up at 330, so I nursed him, and then up again at 530, and I gave him a paci. He went down til 645.

He's slept through the night (11+ hours) several times, so I know he's capable of doing it. Should I try giving him a paci first at every night waking? Is it ok to try doing it consistently for the 2nd one, or should I be nursing him at that one too? I was spoiled by only one night waking for a long time!
