@scg00387: The 2nd paragraph of my comment referred specifically to breastfeeding advocate sites (like Kelly mom), not doctors. In fact, our pediatrician recommended solids before bm, and i only followed this because she had major constipation issues when i did the reverse. But before that i was all, "But Kelly mom says that's not the way to do it!!"

Just saying that the husband's suggestion isn't necessarily the incorrect way. :)

At that age, I offered BM first. BM has much more calories and nutrition , oz for oz, than lets say, something like puréed carrots.

Around the ten month mark, though, I did start to offer solids first (on the advice of my ped) bc LO wasn't eating enough and wasn't gaining enough weight. But at six months, it was def solids after nursing

I agree with ladies above, offer a milk feed before offering solids :) Kelly mom is great! Our LO's are almost exactly a month apart, if I remember correctly. We introduced at 6.5 months.

I offer to nurse LO before solids. We're doing BLW though and believe in the food for fun before one! If he's actually hungry he just wants to nurse, he doesn't equate actual food with satisfying hunger yet. I think all kiddos are different though. Some are ready sooner than others, some dive right in, some play for awhile. I wouldn't push it, that's just me though :) Xander will let you know how he's feeling.

I agree with PPs about milk first. I've also read that offering solids before milk when they're just starting out leads to frustration because they are hungry and can't eat enough quickly enough, but we haven't tried it so I can't personally verify that. We're definitely in the don't worry about it camp. We gave Finn a few bites of food, and he had zero interest in it and Elliot shows even less interest, so we're just waiting another couple weeks.

My theory is to just keep offering it but not pushing it and eventually our little laid back trio of boys will eat, right?!!??!?!

@ALV91711: Our next pediatrician appointment is next Friday, but I already asked Hubs if he would be able to go and he can't come. But I'll be sure to ask about feeding solids after breastfeeding and hopefully relaying the info from the ped to my husband will be good enough!

@Mrsbells: Ahh, so you actually did the solids BEFORE nursing? Is that how you started? Or did you transition to that?

@purrpletulips: OMG!!! I hope I don't just find things in his diaper, haha! Though he's still not mobile, so he can't really find stuff on his own. Although who knows what he gets his hands on at daycare!

Just remembered - a parenting group I'm in has the thought that a LO is ready for solids when you start finding items in their diapers that you didn't give them (for us it was dog fur that got picked up off the floor, for others it was a piece of paper that their LO pulled from a book).

With both DD and DS we have done solids first then nursing but that was more because we wanted to eat as a family and were in the "food for fun before 1" camp. I think it helped that both took to solids quickly without compromising their nursing sessions. All kids are different and some just aren't that into solids; I have a friend whose 2 year old barely eats anything because he is just not into the textures.

I spaced the solids between nursings so that it wouldn't be a competition. My little guy however LOVED solids and started at 4 months with them. As long as your son is gaining weight appropriately, just wait until he's ready. Trust me, you will know because he'll try to steal your food lol!

at 6 months my LO was having only one meal of solids a day and I would give her the solids about an hour or so before nursing. They dont eat much at that time anyway so offering a few spoons of solids an hour before nursing should not have an effect of making them nurse less

He probably just isn't ready as you know. I hope your hubby will listen to you. If Isaac is tired or hungry he won't eat or just a couple bites. If he's really hungry he just wants to nurse.

Do you have a pedi appointment soon? Maybe DH could go with you and find out first hand.

If I gave LO solids when she was starving she would just sit there and scream. She wasn't the best at eating, it took her a while to figure the whole thing out and she would just get frustrated. I would wait about an hour after she had a bottle to give her solids. That way she would eat something, but it wouldn't be so much that I had to worry that she wasn't eating her bottle.

@Freckles: Our pedi said formula before solids as well, so I don't think it's necessarily a breastfeeding recommendation? Though I guess if someone was concerned with milk supply it would be more relevant to bf'ing only.

our pediatrician told us to offer solids after breastmilk/formula. we haven't always followed that advice and it doesn't seem to make a huge difference in how interested he is in solids or how much he nurses (he has 2 TBS of solids per serving). i agree with the others, don't sweat it if he's not that interested right now.

There are some doctors who advocate solids before nursing, so i don't necessarily think that he's entirely wrong.

Breast feeding advocate sites will always say bm before solids, so they will be biased. If he doesn't want to eat after bm then he's probably full and the bm is enough. I would only do it the other way if you are looking to start weaning him soon.

Not all babies are crazy for solids. My LO didn't really start getting into solids until about the 7-8 month mark. There is no rush! He'll get there eventually.

So my husband thinks that one of the reasons Xander's not interested in solids (and just flat our refuses them) is because he's not hungry. We've been offering him solids about an hour after I nurse him. He thinks we should offer him the solids first when he's hungry, and then he'll be more likely to eat them, and then I'll nurse after.

Is this is a good idea? I don't want to replace any of the milk that he gets with solids, so this plan makes me nervous. I don't know how much we would feed him (assuming he takes any of it) before nursing because he won't be full and I won't want to let him get full so that he nurses after.

My thoughts are that if his appetite is not increasing and he's totally satisfied with nursing only, there's no need to try to force him to take solids and that we can just keep offering and if he doesn't eat them, that's not a big deal. But I don't really know - should we try to at least get him used to solids now by feeding them to him when he's hungry? And then maybe when he's comfortable with eating them, we can switch back to nursing first?

What do you all think?

(Xander's 6 months)
