@Jess1483: eh, potatoes aren't super healthy anyway. My nephew hates potato in all forms except French fries--even the cheesiest, sour-creamiest potato casseroles, he hates. He can't be one of us!! lol

(My LO doesn't like potatoes either, but we don't really eat them much, so she's only had them 2-3 times ever. Guess I have to give them 12 more times?)

I think my parents followed the "if she doesn't like it" philosophy, and I'm a super picky eater. I really want DS to be exposed to a lot of different foods/flavors, so I continue to try.

I almost always put it on their plates if I know they didn't care for it in the past. I will only put 1 piece, a tiny tiny scoop etc, so I'm not wasting it every time.

My ped said 15 times. Now, at 2 (next week!) there is only one food I absolutely know he dislikes and won't feed him (mashed potatoes, crazy kid--but I'm sure I made him try it 20+ times!) There are plenty others he's rejected, but I'd still try anything else!

as a weird side note---I have *always* hated broccoli, in any form. LOATHED it. If it was in a food (like in Chinese food), I couldn't just remove the broccoli and eat it, because I could still taste the broccoli residue. True story.

But I've been trying this 15-20 exposure times method on myself....and I can now tolerate broccoli. Because I often model eating foods to get LO to eat them, I would pop some broccoli into my mouth and pretend like I was suuuuper enjoying it, for LOs benefit, even though I could hardly gag it down. But now I'm okay with it.

I still don't *like* it, but I can put it on my plate and make myself finish it. Isn't that weird? That I can hate a food for 34 years and then suddenly start tolerating it, after forcing myself to eat it a dozen times?

How often do you give your LO foods they don't like?

I always read those statistics, where it says kids have to be exposed to new foods 15-20 times before they like it. And since I learned something similar in education training (that you have to teach a student a new concept an average of 17 times before they remember it), it resonates with me and I really remember it. So when my LO doesn't like something, I don't mentally put it on a list of "things LO doesn't like". I just keep offering it to her. Obviously, it takes a long time, so I've only done it with sweet potatoes since it took me offering them about 10 times before LO started warming up to it as a side dish (it's still not her favorite, but she'll eat when she's hungry).

But my husband (and now one of LOs daycare teachers) think I'm crazy. Their philosophy is more like, "she doesn't like it. Why try to give it to her? Just give her the foods she does like". My husband literally starts arguments with me sometimes when I pack certain things in LOs lunch that she doesn't really like. But I kind of figure--oh well--it's just another exposure to add to the list. But then I kind of feel like a "mean mom".

I should add--her weight gain is great these days. So I don't have to worry about weight gain (I realize that's a total game changer, because we went through that when LO was younger).
