The total tally so far is 7 employees. Wow.
It's horrible but it makes me feel a little better that it's spreading this wide.

@regberadaisy: I was able to collect as long as my company was enrolled in the program, with a yearly renewal. So yes. The work share did drain my unemployment 'account' though, so I technically had less funds for if I needed to claim full UI benefits. But I think I was on it for 2 years and still had money left....and there are all the 'emergency' programs for when your funds or time technically run out now.

@MerryC: were you able to continue collecting unemployment for those few years? It's not clear whether there is a time limit for collecting unemployment under the program. Thanks.

I was on a work share program in WA state. Its a pain in that I had to make UI claims every week, but it was nice to recoup some of my lost wages if my pay/hours were going to get cut anyway. Just fyi, if you get another PT job, you may have to report that with UI and it could reduce your work share money...so an under the table side job would probably be better :)

For my company, it was just a way to get through a rough patch....though it lasted a few years. But I didn't lose my job or other benefits.

@regberadaisy: I don't want to worry you but unfortunately yes I do believe loss of benefits would be close behind. If your boss is cutting hours he's obviously in dire straights and looking for ways to save cost. This is about the time of year that companies will be planning their benefits for next year and employees will be making their enrollments. So I wouldn't be surprised if your boss announced changes to the benefits package before the end of the year. Often benefits go BEFORE cutting hours or employees.

@regberadaisy: i've audited lots of financial statements - payroll expenses is definitely very high up there in costs. usually, it's cost of good sold (the cost to actually make or get the product) and payroll expenses that make up most of the expenses - so yeah, i don't think it's far behind, unfortunately. lots of companies are now getting rid of pensions. i know my (old) company changed to a high deductible plan for health insurance - they pay for the insurance premiums. high deductible is cheaper and we have to pay more out of pocket. unless it's a really big international company? maybe they want to stay marketable and keep their plans? good luck!!!

Yesterday I was very positive thinking about all the time I'll spend with M and getting a good final push on the renovations.
Today at work I'm feeling very spiteful.

Just called to inform daycare and looks like we might still have to pay for the day this week I will be pulling her out of daycare since my PT is effective immediately.

@MamaMoose: @tequiero21: @looch: I'm going to work on packing up the house, working at the new house and study for my exams. But yes, I was thinking of looking for side work. I guess I'll poke out for a new job. But I think it'll be highly unlikely. My firm has been around for 21 years and my boss has never laid anyone off before. He did this year which means to me the market is dismal so I highly doubt there are jobs out there.

Do you ladies really think cuts in benefits is not far behind? We can handle the little dip in income. But we can not handle it financially if I lose my health insurance. If we have to go to a family plan on my husband's health insurance while I'm only PT we won't be able to pay the mortgage. One of us will have to get a second job.

I'd be nervous. I mean, when a firm reduces your hours without you having a say in it, it usually means they're in financial trouble, whether they can't collect on fees due to them or they lost a big account.

I too think that the cut in benefits isn't too far behind, so I'd start researching what's available through your husband's employer or the state.

i agree with @MamaMoose. i'd start looking for another job. never heard of the program - sounds interesting. when i had unemployment in ny back like 10 years ago, the max they paid was like $405/week and you have to pay taxes on that. plus it was only 6 months. not sure how long you can collect.

@lemondrop: lol@work for free. that's hilarious. i can't believe they would think ANYONE would even remotely consider that!

I had to do a 6 month furlough while working for an Arizona university in 2009. HR set us up as "work share" so we got unemployment and benefits for our one day a week that we were off. Initially they tried to convince us to come in and work for free that day, but nobody went for it.

My advice is to fill out all of the paperwork, and keep copies of absolutely everything. I had a few paychecks that didn't pay me what I was supposed to get, and had to track down getting that money paid out. I did get a debit card with my unemployment funds in it, and other than a delay of a couple weeks, it wasn't too bad of a deal. I really loved taking the time off and having a day to myself, but I did miss the full paychecks.

It sounds like you should be ok in the short term between work and unemployment but if I were you I'd start looking around. Unemployment only lasts so long. And it's a bad sign for your company if they are having to cut your hours. I would expect that cutting benefits won't be far behind... And there's the possibility to get laid off completely.

Some of you might remember before I was due to return from leave my firm offered me to go part time for "the summer". I politely declined because I was afraid I would end up staying PT.

Today I was informed that I will be part time starting this week. My hours will be cut down to 3 days a week. Under the NY State Work Share program I will be able to collect unemployment on the 2 days I'm not working. He said at least 50% of my pay? Under the program I still get health insurance and all my benefits, according to HR.

I'm not sure how to feel? On the one hand I wanted to be able to "work from home" two days a week. So in a way I'm getting that with collecting unemployment for the 2 days. But I'm also fearing for my job! What if I stay PT forever or worse get laid off eventually? I really like my firm and if it's this dismal here I highly doubt it's any better elsewhere.

Not only do we have a new baby but we're in the midst of some major gut renovations at the new house. Makes me really reconsider dipping into our savings.

I'm trying to look at this as a blessing in disguise bc I'll get to spend more time with M. But I'm not gonna lie, I'm scared for my job. Sigh.

Anyone in HR know more about this "work share program"? The info online is kinda minimal.
