@Torchwood: I was coming here to say the SAME thing! I had a pilonidal cyst too when I was pregnant and I thought it was tailbone pain for the longest time. Mine drained on its own (gross) and I took antibiotics. The Internet freaked me out majority, too! But it's been two years and no recurrence.

@Honeygold89: From what they said, it was close to "popping" and draining on its own. They would normally have you sit in a tub several times a day to soften the skin so it would do so faster. However, since I was staying in the nicu and only had a shower, they opened it up, drained it, and packed it with gauze. Which didn't feel great, but was not near as bad as the Internet led me to fear. I had to go back every other day to repack it with gauze, and take antibiotics. It's been 8 days and when I went back today it was enough better that I don't have to go back, thankfully.

@Honeygold89: That sucks! And it's from that long ago?

Just wanted to throw in my experience for anyone who finds across this later. I developed a lot of pain near my tailbone a few days postpartum, but in my case it's a pilonidal cyst that is infected. Some think trauma to the area can cause it, so it probably is related to the birth. So if you have tailbone area pain, but the area gets really red and swollen, you may want to consider a cyst as a possibility.

Just updating since I had my appointment today. So my tailbone is fractured. When I looked at my X-ray I couldn't believe how out of whack it was. But the doc wants me to try therapy first 3 days a week for the next 4 weeks and use a donut to see if it gets any better and then come back in a month to see how it looks and if it's not any better then he do the shot.

@Tanjowen: I just saw my chiropractor today & he adjusted me. I'm hoping that will help to resume my chiropractic care, & hopefully add in some massage therapy, yes. And, fortunately, it seems my new donut cushion has eased the pain a fair bit that I was feeling while sitting to nurse. I have been taking the Motrin the Dr prescribed me when I was discharged from the hospital, but generally I don't prefer to continue on longer term meds.

I had severe tailbone pain starting at 5 weeks that got to the point I couldn't sit down without pain. I went to my general practitioner, who gave me extra strength Advil and wished me luck.

2 weeks later I went to my OBGYN for a checkup and she suggested a chiropractor. I was highly skeptical, but it has worked! It took a few months, but between the chiropractic care and the massage therapist (it wasn't comfortable type massages, but a bit of torture), I have no pain 18 months PP at all.

My insurance pays for 12 visits per year, the rest I paid out of pocket, and it wasn't too expensive. Hope you all get some relief!

@Rockies11: @FannyMae: hope it doesn't last long for you ladies

@jh524: I thought mines was going away but it seems like when I got pregnant in March the pain came back although it was an ectopic and only lasted 5 weeks so I thought that was really a strange reason for it to start back up and now it hurts just like when I was pregnant and first gave birth it's so weird.

@GoGoSnoGirl: congrats on the new baby! I'm 16 months pp and my tailbone pain is still going strong but it's off and on still my doc is finally referring me to an orthopedic doctor to evaluate it and most likely give me a cortisol shot in the area I'm hoping to make that appointment next week. Hopefully yours doesn't last that long because it is no fun like I said mines started when I was around 33 weeks pregnant and now I'm 16 moths pp and still have problems sitting for long periods of time and getting up almost hurt just as much.

@jape14: @Rockies11: @jh524: @FannyMae: Thanks, ladies... though, I was afraid you'd all say it may take a good long time. I should remember, myself, as I broke my tailbone years ago snowboarding. I know it took many months, if not longer, back then to heal up, but I only really remember the occasional pain while doing sit-ups, etc. not the nearly constant ache & increased pain while sitting & when getting up from sitting. We just bought me a cut out cushion to sit on... hopefully that helps a little. :bummed:

chiming in here too - my tailbone was in absolute agony for a good 8 weeks after I had my DD (vaginal/vaccuum). I was sitting sideways on pillows for quite some time, shuddering at the thought it will happen again.

@Honeygold89: my tailbone felt like it curved out more or was more pronounced after having my lo. The weird thing is I didn't end up having him vaginally but something definaltey shifted! It hurt to sit, felt like it was protruding and exercises like sit ups were very painful.
Now at 2 years, it has gone back to normal and only have some discomfort if I sit for a long period if time. Maybe I've just gotten used to it by now ... ;)

@GoGoSnoGirl: just seeing this and thought I'd jump in. I fractured my tailbone delivering and the pain started to subside substantially around 10 weeks. I asked my OB about it at my 6-week checkup and he said it could take up to a year to get better so I'm happy that at 9mo PP it only hurts after a really long day sitting in my crappy desk chair at work.

I broke/bruised my tailbone during labor, too. My OB didn't think it would be worth it to run x-rays because it's not like you could really do much about it, except to let it heal. LO is 20 months and I still have to lean to my left sometimes to sit. Being 35 weeks, the pain is starting to come back more!

I had this (notice the past tense).

When your body prepares for delivery your tailbone moves slightly back out of the way. With all the post-partum sitting around ( feeding and whatnot) it sometimes has trouble moving back again, hence the intermittent pain.

I highly recommend seeing an osteopath (a licensed medical physician with a "DO" degree, not an "MD") who will adjust you and the pain will be gone!

(You could try a chiropractor but their training's not nearly as intensive and they are not medical doctors. Just my two cents.)

You can find an osteopath near you through the American Osteopathic Association website's find a doctor feature.

@Honeygold89: I don't think it's normal to have extreme tailbone pain. I read a girl's blog (heatherdrive) and she had a super fast labor/delivery with her DD1 and broke her tailbone in the process. She didn't discover it was broken until a few weeks PP too. I would insist my doc address it fully so it can be monitored.

So like I posted in my previous post I'm going on 7 weeks pp and had my 6 week check up yesterday and didn't get any answers to my concerns. I told the doc about the pain that I have been having in my tailbone which makes it very uncomfortable to sit and her best advice was to put ice on it and she said she had no clue why I was feeling it. I had this same thing during my last few months of pregnancy but didn't worry to much because I thought it was just the position and weight of LO but now at 7 weeks pp I'm still having it.

Is this Normal?
