@zippylef: @Adira: really? I worked in retail too and always had an option to "override" prices and input coupons even if the computer didn't accept them... even before I became a lead!

If they complained, they'll probably receive a coupon equal to the one that's expired. Most large retailers will do this.

My Banana Republic (same as Gap/ON acct) store card was the first card to send a message that since I was in the area affected, they would understand if I could not make my next payment, etc., etc. I thought that was really nice of them.

idk... I can see if they needed food and water and a supermarket wasn't allowing them to buy it. But shopping at Old Navy and trying to use coupons? I don't have a ton of sympathy for those people. It sounds like they just want to complain about being part of a group that's being slighted. And retail workers don't have a ton of power to be able to do stuff like that anyway.

I don't know anything about Old Navy's Supercash, but I could definitely see where they might feel if the person has had the coupons for months, the hurricane isn't really a good excuse for having not used them. And I've worked in retail too, so it can be really difficult to over-ride the computer system to accept expired coupons, if not impossible.

That said, I agree with @tororojo about them accepting them in areas where the Hurricane hit the hardest, if only to avoid the bad publicity!

Ya I don't think not accepting coupons makes Old Navy bad people. I think there are more important things to be worrying about than shopping.

I understand why the stores didn't accept them. I worked in retail for a long time and some stores computer systems wont even accept expired coupons. At VS, it was always a no to accepting anything expired.

If my house was damaged and I was evacuated and without power/water/gas for so long, I don't know that a coupon would be what I was worried about.

I don't think companies refusing to accept expired coupons means they, aren't supporting hurricane victims.

I think it sucks for the hurricane victims, but as someone who used to work retail at a big corporate chain, it sucks to make exceptions for certain people because then you have to make them for everyone! BUT in this instance they should probably go ahead and accept them in hurricane-hit areas since it's the nice thing to do, plus the bad publicity could be really damaging.

One of my friends in NY and another lady commented on the Old Navy facebook page stating that they were out of power/water etc for weeks (and evacuated) and obviously shopping was last thing on their minds, but when they went to the store after they got power/gas back, they tried to use their supercash which had expired only a few days earlier (but obviously never would have been available to shop during those days), but they wouldn't let them. They called several stores and all of them had a "it's not my problem" attitude, and even called corporate.
Makes me really sad that they say on their website they're supporting Hurricane Sandy victims but not really...

What do you think?
