My son was like that for the entire 6.5 months after he was born. No matter how early or late we start his bedtime routine, he would never finally stay asleep until close to midnight. This occurred every single night until we finally sleep trained him. It seems like ages ago now but am going through sleep training currently with our second child. It's not any easier, emotionally. Hopefully Olive will be able to sleep better on her own.

@mrsnarbonne: i have to keep switching it up. hold her for a little while. put her in the carrier. in the swing. in the bouncer. she's relatively calm when we put her down most of the time, but she gets fussy after a little while and we just need to switch it up. usually what finally does her in is nursing... but that's after i've nursed her like 3-4 times and she's been up for hours.

@looch: do you mean limit activity at night? once charlie goes to bed at 7:30, the house is pretty much quiet. she has an earlier bedtime of 6:30, but we've tried putting her down after charlie too which hasn't really helped either.

she was up til 11:30 again last night, but at least she did a 5 hour stretch after that, woke up for a feeding, and then went straight back down again for another 3 hours.

It sounds more and more like a day and night confusion, is there anything you can do in the house to limit the activity at that time?

If she's up from 6pm-midnight, could you just have her stay up instead of trying to fight it? It seems like you're doing all the right things to encourage a sleepy environment, so if she's just not tired, maybe wear her as you go about your chores/tasks? You are usually up from 6pm to midnight, anyways, right?

Whenever E was like that, I'd just put him on my back in the baby carrier and carry on with my chores. Nothing like a housework routine of vacuuming and washing dishes to bore him to sleep. :) And if he was still awake, at least he was content and I'd gotten stuff done.

@Rubies: Just FYI, until 8 months, a lot of babies don't actually shed tears cause their tear ducts aren't fully developed yet. See below link for details :)

You might want to try the bouncy exercise ball, if you are desperate. I found that tip on a board and never saw it in a print book. Anyway, it was my husband's lifesaver...mine was nursing. Also she liked to suck on my pinky in the very young months. Weird as it may sound. Now my husband uses the car if need be, or jiggles her like he's playing the guitar with her. The ball was a necessity for the first 6 months but after that, not so much. She likes to roll it around still so it's a good investment. :)

Our LO started really responding to music around that age. My husband would take her and put her to sleep by singing to her.

I'd nurse her then play a game like kissing her cheeks or hands in a pattern to get her to focus on us and, then swaddle, then my husband would walk around and sing to her and lay her in the crib and sing one more song. She even had certain songs that would help put her to sleep faster.

@Andrea: yah i think it is in our future, but i'm not sure when we can sleep train. also i just feel a lot more guilty with sleep training olive than i did charlie because she was born early and is so much smaller (charlie was 90% so i felt less guilty).

meanwhile a friend's baby the same age as olive is sleeping 8 hours straight. oh the glory!

@Andrea: she doesn't nap that much in the daytime because her naps have become shorter and shorter. when this 6pm - midnight mischief was sporadic, her daytime naps didn't seem to indicate whether she would be up or not.

@808love: nope don't have an exercise ball. some nights i'm willing to try anything!

@Rubies: i never thought about whether no tears = not really crying. i guess i considered crying without tears still crying? also i think toddlers tend to shed more actual tears than babies?

@chopsuey119: olive is not a fan of the swing alas.

@Thehistoryofus: i will try that in our closet!

@Mrs. Marbles: i even tried cosleeping in desperation. i don't know what it is about those hours, but she just won't sleep!

The only thing that worked for us was co-sleeping and now LM won't get out of our bed! I definitely don't suggest going that route. I noticed that LM does get startled (then scared) easily so she would wake up in fits every hour or so when sleeping by herself in the crib. She likes the comfort of me and Papa Marbles nearby. She even grabs onto our arms and faces while she is sleeping for security. My parents told me I was the same way. :(

I know this sounds terrible, but I used to stand in my closet with the door closed with LO. It was pitch black so she couldn't see anything and I would either hum or sing while I swayed/bounced and eventually she would calm and go to sleep. Any light she could see and it would distract her and she would stay awake.

P.S. - What do you consider to be crying? When I went to rescue LO, she has zero tears. She was just yelling for me, I guess. But without crying, I don't count it as "crying". Am I wrong?

I feel your pain! I have a child that's been a difficult sleeper since the first days. We used to bounce him on the exercise ball to get him to sleep, it worked for a long time, but was a difficult habit to break. If I could do it over again I would never have started that.

Olive's sleep has been getting worse and worse. She's usually up from 6pm - midnight most nights. Sometimes she dozes off, but the minute she's in the crib she wakes up. She hasn't slept a wink in the past 4 hours now. Even a walk outside in the stroller, wearing her, the swing, holding her, pacifier, nursing her, can't get her asleep! i'm pooped!

she sleeps pretty well the rest of the time... this is just her witching hour.

Any creative ideas on getting her to sleep?
