@sloaneandpuffy: I thought she's at least "all over" the puffs AKA baby crack! LOL. At least it sounds like she's an independent eater, and I'm sure it will get better....at least that is what I keep telling myself! Update me when it does! :)

@looch: Wha? I thought it would get better at 18 months! Maybe ups and downs are inevitable! I totally think they would figure out that something they liked would come after the new foods, as if they know Mommy wouldn't let him starve, right? ;)

Yes we have more food ending up on the floor right now than in her mouth. She thinks its a game, and then will shout for more food even though she's thrown most of it on the floor...very annoying but I know it's part of the learning process!

Gah, I struggle with food and my son...he was a great eater until 18 months and it all went to crap, I don't know why.

He has a very limited diet and I've been doing some reading and found that it seems the best time to try a new food is at breakfast time and you may have to offer it 10 times before they accept it.

I've tried everything, including the new food before the accepted food, but my son realized that there was something else coming after the first attempt and that game was over.

Why is eating so stressful!

I have no personal experience, but an experienced mamma told me recently what she does is wait for her LO to be very hungry, then she'll put the veggies/new food in front of him first and wait. She won't even tell hima bout the fruit or chicken nuggets that are going to follow so he thinks that's all he's getting.

@cranberryapple: No advice here.. We don't do BLW but I've been trying to add some finger foods...ugh.

@MsLipGloss: I had luck with the gerber carrot pickups too. I bought them because the pedi's handout said something about not making carrots at home, although I've read it's actually ok. Anyway I just put a few in her mouth for her and then she started picking them up and eating them...although she LOVES the puffs and will just eat a little bit of carrots...

DD is 14 months and we still go through this at times. And she's been switching up what she'll actually eat which makes it even more frustrating. She used to LOVE beans and blueberries. Now they're thrown on the floor in disgust. She'll eat pasta for dinner but won't eat it for lunch at daycare. Wtf? It's really hard not to take it personally when you put such effort into preparing the food.

@cranberryapple: oye! That's so frustrating! We learned that if she sees us sprinkle lemon/lime juice on the veggies, she'll eat them up. And whenever she would only go for fruit, we stopped offering it to her until she got back on track with the veggies. Oh, and those fruit/veggie pouches were a lifesaver(no matter how much I despised them). At least I knew she would get some sort of veggie intake.

Haha found your thread! Oh my gosh @MsLipGloss: your baby sounds like mine! I'm like,"I paid 20 bucks for that +%*+#* organic chicken so don't you #%^* throw it on the floor!!!!!" She also has learned too soon to shake her head no and she shakes it and laughs at me. She thinks spoons are the devil's utensil.

@cranberryapple: I have more hope for your kid than mine because mine has never "at least tried" everything and she doesn't even like a lot of fruit... She's not "all over" anything! Gah!!!!

My LO is 11 months . . . the extent of her solids so far has been puffs. Puffs! She will eat them 3 at a time if you let her! No sweet potato, kiwi, banana, blueberries, avocado . . . the list goes on. *sigh* I just keep offering. She'll eat purees like a champ(!), but just pushes the fruits and veggies around her tray. I cry a little when I throw out organic produce, but, I digress.

@Kimo: You know just what I mean!! It's such a relief when DH is home and I can let him feed DS! I know he won't let himself starve but he instead seems to make up for it with extra nursing, not actual food....LOL! What a long phase to get through, but hopefully we will come out of this with him being less picky eventually! That's my goal!

@Kemma: I guess I over-exaggerated the amount of effort I spent preparing his food....it's actually *our* food too, so he does get to eat what we eat all the time. :) One thing I should work on is eating WITH him. I tend to take the time he is eating to clean and get things done while he's still trapped in his high chair! LOL.

DS went through this phase when was around 12-18 months. It drove me crazy, for real. I felt like dinner time was always a battle ground between us, especially because I worked so hard to find special recipes for him, and many times he wouldn't even try it. I would have to walk away and let my husband take over because I'd get so stressed.

I promise you though, it does get better. Just try not to stress out about it... I know it's so hard, but kids won't let themselves starve. This is a phase and it will pass. DS is a great and adventurous eater now, although like your son, he will always prefer fruit over anything else over his plate!

Aww I feel your pain.
My DD wasn't big on solids at that age either.
At 28 months old, she still annoys me sometimes. I know you're hungry, so eat what's in front of you!!

Yes, yes, harsh words, but when I spend most of his two nap times each day slaving away in the kitchen to provide him with nutritious meals and when all of it ends up on the floor immediately, I do get a bit rage-y on the inside! He wouldn't even try the asparagus this time, whereas he would normally at least try a bite of everything before deciding if he wanted more or not. I get so annoyed when he starts dropping food on the ground, but I'm trying not to react to his shenanigans. I feel like I haven't made anything he really liked in a long time! I make something different for every meal too. I don't even know what he likes anymore.....aside from FRUIT.

Of course, when I bring out the fruit, he is all over that! But, it's not like he can only have fruit all-the-time, right? Oh wait....oddly enough, he will always go for the spoonful of cod liver oil I offer him after his dinner. Go figure. That ish is nasty to me!

ARGH! I can't even shove food into his mouth via spoon/hand because he insists on feeding himself! He will grab the fork/spoon and fail miserably at getting at his own food, and then he will get frustrated, which leads to the throwing of the fork/spoon.

*Sigh* What happened to my happy/easy-going baby??!! Will he ever come back?? Any words of wisdom, advice, commiseration?? It's to the point where I *DREAD* his feeding times!! I'd rather just nurse him if I could!!!
