They have track out camps here for kids who are on the year round schedule but I'm not sure what we'll do if she ends up in a traditional school. My mom was a SAHM when we were little but went back to work full-time when I was in elementary school (youngest child). By that time, my older sister was old enough to keep an eye on me the 3 days a week my mom worked at the office (she still works at home 2 days/week). We lived in town and could walk to the beach, downtown, or the library. My friends would get dropped off at our house a lot too (they lived way out in the country). We want to daycamp run by the school when we were young even though our Mom was a SAHM. They did field trips every Friday. One memorable one was to the county dump on the hottest day of the summer. But there was also an annual canoeing trip and dune climb. We went to a private camp for a few summers, and I loved it. It's now owned by the YMCA, so we may send DD there in the future. DH never went to camp and doesn't sound like he "gets it". I went to fun and fitness camp, and a theater camp. My mom worked for my dad so she could easily set her own hours and go in late/take off early depending on when the camp times were. I have no idea what we'll do. Currently I'm a SAHM, but the plan is for me to get a PT job when the kids are in school. My 3 y.o. took swimming and tennis last summer but it didn't cover the entire day or the entire summer but it was fun for him. His preschool also offers two weeks of summer camp so we did that too. As for me, my parents always dropped me off at my relatives in Taiwan for two months in the summer so did various things there. but we always went on vacation in the summer when we were older. I remember days of being too sick for school and having to stay at the tire shop. Not so much fun. I imagine we'll try to do a summer nanny and/or have me go back to part time during the summers. They sent us to hong long one summer to stay with my aunt. That was a ton of fun. LOs will probably do summer camps. Maybe 2 - 3 per summer, and a whole variety of them. Sometimes I went to summer school, and other times I went to camps at the Science Museum, at a Jewish Center (uhm, I'm Asian), at the YMCA, Taiwanese camps, at Northwestern University... the list goes on! And I think I enjoyed them, for the most part. There were some sucky camps, but I usually made friends! My husband has never been to summer camp, but I insist our kids will! I would consider a part time nanny. I know the elementary school I worked at had a summer program at the school. Kids could be dropped off as early as 6 am and picked up no later than 6pm. A structured curriculum started at 9am. There was a lot of playing outside, gym time and once a week field trips. I personally wouldn't do that only because the schools in my district suck. If I was in a better school district I might be more okay with that. Charlie and Olive have WAH/WOH parents though, so we'll have to come up with a new plan. I've heard a lot of parents send their kids to summer camp... now that I see the need for summer child care, that suddenly makes a lot more sense to me. Still, not sure that covers the entire summer. Once your child is in school, what are you going to do for childcare during the summer? How did your parents handle your summer childcare growing up?
