@Weagle: well said!! Bento is very popular on Hellobee. Funny my husband (who drops LO off to daycare and put our *bento* box into the fridge each morning) said to me, why do you spend so much time making the lunch box? I saw people bringing chick-fil-A (he saw a chick-fil-A bag in the fridge, maybe leftover food from dinner last night?). It cracked me up so bad!!! HAHA

So at least you are offering healthy food to your baby !! ;)

I just wanted to add, bentos are popular on HB, but you must remember that HB represents a very small percentage of parents. I know plenty of people who are still spoon feeding their kids past a year, and plenty of kids who refuse anything but purees past a year! It's certainly a wonderful resource, but I do have to tell myself often that I need to keep my guilt in check by basing it on reality, not HB.

@Irene- thanks for the hug. Good to know that there's hope for picky eaters bc i recall your previous posts on your frustration with feeding your LO. My LO is at a home daycare right now and the caregiver is really nice to spend the extra time and effort to spoon feed her. My plan is to send her to a 'real' daycare at 2.5 yrs and i figure by then, she'll learn to feed herself there. I know it will happen eventually, just not sure when. We're also Asian so i guess that whole spoon feeding thing must be ingrained in me somehow. I just can't stand the mess that's on the floor and on her face/hair the few times i've let her try to feed herself.

@T-mom- i do need to constantly remind myself that every baby is different and i'm doing the best i can to get food into my picky eater. It's just hard to see all the bento posts and not worry a little. :)

I spoonfed my DD for a long time too, until she was at least 2. She is a picky eater and just wouldn't feed herself. She goes to day care, so for that I resorted to sending the only things she was willing to eat on her own, which was Mac n cheese (I would purée veggies into it) and grilled cheese, and fruit. At dinner time she was spoon fed mixed up food. My mom told me to just starve her but I couldn't bring myself to do it. She's a much better eater nowadays at age 4.5 but still on the picky side. Sometimes I still load her spoon up for her when she is dawdling! DS on the other hand eats with gusto. Every child is different. I would keep offering finger foods but don't feel bad to do what you need to do to get her fed!

Hugs. I do understand....

You know, in Asian culture, people spoon-feed their child until much older. My mom said she spoon fed me with porridge until I was a lot older, and she always disapprove me when I told her how LO is feeding himself 100%. Even my friends they are still spoon feeding their toddlers and that's just how it goes.

So the answer to your question is, of course they eventually learn, as apparently no one is feeding me anymore lol. I am not sure about the timeline though.

ETA: My friend did say her 4 year old daughter still prefer to be fed. She knows how to use utensils to eat but she just prefers to be fed. So I don't know if it is just a personal preference or that's the growth chart of kids who are strictly spoon fed.

For me I would have done the same as you do too if I didn't end up putting LO in daycare! If you really really want your LO to start feeding yourself, maybe that's a way to go. Our daycare room (12-18 months) asks us to pack only finger foods, and they do not spoon feed. I freaked out in the beginning thinking my son would starve (my son enrolls when he was 11.5 months), but it ends up that everything was more than fine. He saw other kids eating and he eats. He eats so well and was feeding his friends! Now he eats a lot of food all on his own. A lot of food ended up on the floor, on his face, on his hair...etc. in the process, but he fed himself. And it just keeps getting better (ie. less to no food on the floor now :))

Hugs mama!

Seeing all the recent bento boxes has gotten me feeling really guilty and a bit worried. A bit of background..LO is a pretty picky eater, was diagnosed with silent reflux and i'm a type a control neat freak. We started her on cereal and puree food at 5 mths, she didn't learn to use her pincer grip to feed herself till about 9.5 months. Being the neat freak that i am, i was never comforable with BLW and letting her self feed. Fast forward to today at 14.5 mths, LO is still spoonfed 3x/day with finely cut up food and refuses to eat any fruit/veggies that are cut up or in chunks/strips. She will put it in her mouth only to spit it out after. She will eat a cracker, chunks of cheese, cheerios, puffs or chunks of chicken and nothing else. When things are cut up into small bits and mixed together, she will eat it.

My question is...are there any other bees out there experiencing the same thing? Will she eventually learn to eat or should i 'starve' her by only offering finger foods at meal time so she'll have to eat if she's hungry. She's only 3rd percentile on the weight chart so i'm afraid of her losing more weight.

Thanks all in advance,
