No advice on the fluid levels but I was induced at 37w (severe pre-e) and DD was born at 37w2d and didn't need any NICU time. Perfectly happy and healthy! Best of luck to you!

@PurplePeony: Oooh, thank you! Maybe the midnight nurses didn't know to offer that up to me last time. Or maybe it's just one those things you have to be proactive about. I appreciate you arming me with that knowledge.

@sweetooth: regarding GBS, they can test for it when you get to the hospital. My initial swab got frozen on its way to the lab and couldn't be tested. They took another at my next appointment but my water broke that night (37+3) so I didn't have the results back. When I got to the hospital, they immediately did a swab and sent it to the onsite lab, and within the hour they came back with the result. So you could ask about the quick test if necessary.

@Mamasig: Ok. Thanks for sharing that. I'm hoping I can still have a vaginal birth even if tomorrow is the big day. I know there's always a chance - but I'm hoping that even if the induction is a long process it can end with a vaginal birth.

@Truth Bombs: Thank you for sharing! Monitoring and low impact sports are definitely not the end of the world. I just wish my guy didn't come into the world with limitations right from the start, you know? Still, I'm kind of happy to say no to hockey, football, etc. :)

@nana87: Thank you for sharing about your induction and that you were still able to have a vaginal delivery and no nicu time. It's hard not to beat myself up if it's go time tomorrow - but I'll try to remember my placenta could just be waving the white flag. That, and my little guy's just like to get the party started early. No 40+ weeks for me or them!

@fuzzypeaches: They sure do like to kick off the worry-o-meter right off the bat! It's crazy that we were both talking about the GBS results and our first pregnancies, and look at how things went down for you - and I might be in the same boat! I'm glad you had no nicu time for your little guy. And thanks for sharing about your friend's baby

@bluestriped bee: Thank you friend! I hope you are doing well and your little girl and boy and treating mama well

@sweetooth: I was already having a repeat c (nothing to do with the fluid levels). It just got bumped up because of the low levels. I was already passed 37 weeks and the doctor said there was no reason to wait. Staying with low levels was more a concern.

@raintreebee: Thank you for your advice. I have already been proactive with my OB office trying to get a hold of these results myself so I am armed and ready, but they told me they don't think they will have them in until Friday. I feel like without that result, they will want to treat "just in case" - but I'm going to push for finding out those results. I really don't want unnecessary antibiotics. It's hard when you talk with your OB about your preferences, but then you have the hospital staff just trying to be cautious. When I went in last time I was in the hospital before the OB office was open (midnight) so they didn't have access to the results. Maybe everything will just work out this time. It's one of the details I am hoping to change this time around. Even though I'm very aware at how much this entire process is out of our control.

@LibbyLou: Thanks for sharing about your sister's little girl. I was told about the non-impact sports and honestly that makes me a little happy because I don't really want my little guy getting injured playing hockey or football. But it's hard to think about him coming into this world with limitations right off the bat, you know?

@Mamasig: Thank you for sharing and for the details about your amniotic fluid levels. I know all doctors are different, so it will be interesting to know if they think if I'm at an 8, if that will be good enough to keep going a few more days before another check. Did you have to get the c-section because of the fluid levels? Or were you already scheduled for a c-section? That option is something I haven't wrapped my head around yet.

@iluvboba637: Thank you for sharing your stories. I do hope that I can help put off an earlier than expected induction by doing my best with the water intake. I don't think the kidney diagnosis has anything to do with early induction - except for the fact that it might be contributing to the lower fluid levels. With only one kidney he can't contribute to the "pool" :)

@mrs.shinerbock: Thank you for sharing, and for letting me know about your induction. I was induced last time as well because my water broke at 37w5d but I was nowhere near dilated. I had 18 hours of labor. I was hoping that my second born would come sooner, but I guess time will tell. Just doesn't seem possible though if I deliver a whole week earlier. Was your induction for your second baby or first?

Oh my goodness so stressful! These little guys like to start the parental worrying early!

My son was born at about 36w and didn't need any nicu! We did stay an extra day to make sure his weight was ok but he was perfectly fine :) 36w5d is a pretty good gestation!

and fwiw my friends baby just has one kidney and is a happy healthy 1 year old! I don't know if she had the same fluid concerns, but for the baby They just monitor his hydration really well.

Big hugs!

@sweetooth: It would be so much harder to take it easy with a toddler! Don't beat yourself up about it though, even with all the rest and hydration I could muster my levels still dropped too low, I think at a certain point my placenta just crapped out. I was able to have a vaginal delivery and even though it lasted like 36 hours it was really a wonderful birth. Despite not having enough fluid to measure, lo was born in the amniotic sac after like only 20 mins of pushing and minimal tearing. No nicu time at all-- I had a little fever and she was making sad little grunty noises but we both went home after 2 days.

Good luck lady! I know I was an anxious mess having to be induced but it'll work out!

One of my good friend's sons was born with one kidney (apparently it's genetic, my friend's husband's grandfather also only had one kidney). The baby will need some extra monitoring and can't play contact sports when he grows up but that's it.

No advice about the low fluid, but I delivered my son at 37 weeks. Even though we didn't get the GBS test results back before he came, my OB let me go without meds. Perhaps you could discuss this option with your provider?

One of my friends had very low fluid levels at 34w and made it to 37w by drinking over 100oz of water and doing modified bed rest. So maybe you can make it another wk or 2 by doing that. Fingers crossed for you.

My son has hydronephrosis of one kidney of mild/moderate degree but his other kidney is normal. While he was in utero they thought it was moderate to severe and I also did modified bedrest for blood pressure and other reasons but I managed to make it til 40w until I was induced. They never said anything about induction for his kidney though, it was always just a wait and see.

With DS2, I had GD and had weekly ultrasounds from about 32 weeks on. I remember that at about 35 weeks, they mentioned the amniotic fluid level was at 10. My doctor said that at above 5, it's ok.. I think 25 was the top end figure. At 36+5, the level was 6. My doctor recommended I rest as much as possible and drink a gallon of water a day. I did that but it didn't help at all. At my next appointment one week later (37+5), the tech didn't even tell me the number, but I could see it wasn't good. I had gotten used to the ultrasounds and knew how she measured and what she was looking for. Turns out my number 1.5. My OB had a nurse walk me over to the hospital and my c section was moved up to that day. I had him within 3 hours. He was totally healthy, but did have jaundice. He was at a higher likelihood to get jaundice because of our blood types and being early.

Not me- but my sister. Her youngest was born with a small sliver of her right kidney. She had to monitored and the best case was that it was absorbed into her body. If it stuck around she would need surgery. My niece is 2, the kidney is completely gone and she's happy and healthy.
She won't be able to play contact sports, but that's a small price to pay.
Good luck

I had extremely low amniotic fluid levels and was induced at 37 weeks. On top of low fluid levels, DS quit growing at 32 weeks (found out later it was because my placenta was deteriorating faster than it should) so that also drove the induction decision. My OB wanted to induce me at 35 weeks, but my MFM said I could wait it out a bit.

My induction went easy and smooth once we figured out DS didn't like me laying on my left side (caused heart decels). I delivered him vaginally and while he did have a quick stint in NICU, it was for a phantom symptom that came and went. He came out healthy with fully developed lungs. We went home 2 days after delivery.

Best of luck to you!

@nana87: Thank you for sharing your story with me. I was wondering what number my fluid would have to be in order for them not to admit me on Thursday. I wish I could say I'm taking it easy, but that's hard to do with a 19 month old and the desire to squeeze in a few more tasks before baby #2 arrives. I hope my running around, doing last minute errands and chores doesn't deplete the fluid I'm taking in too much. This summer heat doesn't help either!

Were you able to have a vaginal delivery with induction at 37 weeks? Did your baby require any NICU time at that stage? These are just a few questions floating around in my head right now...

I was induced because of low fluid, though lo has both kidneys. I was monitored from about 32 weeks on (weekly//sometimes biweekly) bpp/NSTs until one day I went in and they literally couldn't measure my fluid it was so low. I was 37w when they induced. My numbers bounced around from 5-8 for a couple weeks before totally dropping. Drinking obscene amounts of water and being on "couch rest" helped lo stay in a little longer

I am currently 36w4d. My due date is 7/11, but at my ultrasound on Monday I found out that my son only has one kidney and that my amniotic fluid is measuring low.

At this stage my fluid numbers need to be between 8-25, and mine were at 5.3 on Monday. So they recommended that I drink a TON and then come back on Thursday to get checked again. And if the numbers aren't high enough, then I will be admitted and this baby is coming early.

My first son was born early. 37w5d. But if it's go time on Thursday, I will be 36w5d. I know the most important thing is to do what's healthy and safe for baby and I. But I'd really like the baby to have a little more time inside. And I also really wanted to get my GBS test results this time around. I didn't have them before being admitted last time and I was treated as if I was positive. But it turns out I was negative and I didn't need that medicine in my system. I feel like it was one of the contributing factors to my unsuccessful breast-feeding experience.

I don't have any specific questions tied to this post. I guess I just wanted to share my story. Did anyone else have low fluid and have to deliver early? Does anyone else have a kiddo with one kidney? It's actually an unbelievably common occurrence. Still, I can't help but be a little bummed that there's nothing I could have done to prevent the lack of kidney development.

Here's hoping I still have some more time to provide for him on the inside. But if it's time to deliver tomorrow, I'm as ready as I'll ever be.
