@mediagirl: Thank you for the photoshopped picture! :) That actually made me almost like the exterior! I think it will really look nice as the landscaping matures and we put some extra special touches to make it ours.

@coopsmama: I think once that tree grows and you add some bushes, it will make HUGE improvements. I would also consider mulching along the driveway and along the sidewalk. A couple of chairs and a table with a plant or cushions on the chairs will make a huge deal, too. And that stuff doesn't cost as much as redoing the whole exterior. :)

We have a front yard that looks similar with the sidewalk and berm and after 5 years, it finally looks good to us. :)

@looch: I'm just now seeing your comment and location was the biggest factor in signing today for this house! I agree with you about garages being on the side - I prefer that too but that isn't really a common look around here!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: We went for it! Ultimately location and the upgrades won out - and the fact that it allows us to not have to be tight financially in other ways. We're really excited!

@lamariniere: We painted our first house and it wasn't super expensive - even for having a professional do it! I think we will look into it down the road. :)

@Synchronicity: You're so right! And now that we agreed to the offer I'm getting excited to envision how we can make it our own outside.

@Ash: @Chillybear: @Sunshine1810: I will have to update you all in 6 months or so (once we get to spring) with some pictures of how we have spruced it up! :)

@Mrs. Pickles: You gave some great advice! We accepted the offer today and are just going to play with the exterior as much as we can. You are so right about not wanting to be in a state of flux with young children.

We made the best decision we could within the timing and financial constraints and haven't had any immediate buyer's remorse! :)

@coopsmama: since we're in the middle of purchasing appliances... I would go with the builder offer to upgrade. Investment-wise buyers often tend to look at upgrades inside and yard space more than simply the exterior of the home. Fencing is a huge undertaking and if you don't have to do it yourself (or hire out) it saves time and money. It is a more "box-like" structure but landscaping can change appearances tremendously... you'd be surprised with edging some flower boxes and perhaps a light pole (which would go with the carriage garage door idea) can do.
Also since you have littles, do you want to be in a state of flux while your home is being built?
Here's hoping you are happy with your decision :)

Honestly everything sounds perfect except for the exterior so I don't know if I could pass it up! That said, there is so much you can do to help with the exterior.

I think I would start with some paint, and spring for a new garage door. Since the garage is such a focal point, you can get a really beautiful door, that will definitely change things. I also think that adding some flowering bushes and trees outside can really soften it up.

I actually really like the look of this house. I think with a little landscaping, flowers, decor and maybe some different paint colors the house could really shine. As others have said, if the house is in a good location and it has everything you need inside, plus the builders are offering some great updates, why not?

As far as the trim on the inside, couldnt that be painted too? Pain in the ass but YHL and Bower Power were doing it room by room.

So I'm not, and probably never will be a home owner, but the problem with your house seems to be the colors/exterior finishing. I have no idea if it is financially feasible to repaint the whole thing, but I think that different colors could really make a difference. Also, it definitely needs some landscaping. The real estate agency is offering a TON of perks that would be hard to pass up. Keep us updated!

I am not one to talk, quite honestly, because I don't love my house, BUT, I will say, I don't mind that house and its boxiness at all. I don't care for the fact that the garage doors are in the front like that (my preference is on the side) but I would weigh the benefits of the location...is the house physically where you want it to be, above the shape of it.

I think with some landscaping, a light next to the door, and some hardware on the garage would really make it look more finished. If you love the inside and the outside isn't going to be a problem with resale, I'd find a way to love it. How often do you sit outside admiring your house compared to the amount of time you spend enjoying living in it?? The space sounds like what you're looking for & it would save you another move. I hate moving. Good luck with your decision!!

@coopsmama: I agree with PP, it mostly just looks unfinished. It does appear boxy, but that's mostly because all of the architectural elements blend in together. Break those up, and give the house some personality, for a start. Look at photos online or in home decorating magazines for inspiration on how to paint the trim or trim plus the uppermost, vertical siding. Add additional colour using shutters and/or window boxes. Paint the garage door or switch it out for one that has windows or other details on the front (and then paint it!). Put in a rail, and landscape the front yard. Landscaping does wonders for your curb appeal and really changes how you feel about your house.

We're into our 4th house purchase in 7 1/2 years - our jobs require us to move frequently - and regularly only get a week to "house hunt," meaning find a house in the new city, put in an offer and have it accepted. What helps us is knowing that none of the houses we buy are our forever homes, but just our right now homes. I've really liked them all, for different reasons, but love-love... not really. Of course, the longer you expect to stay in the house, the more you should love it; otherwise, those little annoyances that are okay for a short time will drive you crazy!
