I would stick with it....but maybe even do it at 10:30 or 11, or whatever time is easiest for you.

Heads up....not all kids take 2-3 hour afternoon naps though! My first was a solid 1.5 hour morning nap and then 45 min - 1 hour afternoon nap. When we went to one nap it was 1.5 hours, that's it. And he almost always woke unhappy!

@luckypenny: @NurseDMB: This is exactly what my 16 month old is doing. She doesn't want to nap at all so we decided to consolidate the naps to one nap at 1:00pm but typically she won't make it to 1pm. She's exhausted by 12:30. She would cry even though she is exhausted and fall asleep still sitting. She is also waking up at night because most likely she didn't nap well during the day. Prior to this she has always been a good night sleeper. She is not teething. This is already a week now.
I was wondering when will she extend her nap? Will her nap be even extended? Any suggestions on how I can extend her nap? Will she sleep better at night?

Also, when DS transitioned I moved up his nap time every 10 minutes everyday so he would gradually get used to it. At first he was just napping at 930, but I kept bumping it up. As he got older, he could handle more awake time - now he doesn't nap until 1/130.

DS transitioned himself to one nap when he was 11 months (super early!) and we went through this, too. Luckily it was just a phase. Eventually he started sleeping longer and longer for his one nap, now he regularly sleeps 2-3 hours for his nap which is nice.

DS used to go to bed super early around 6 like your LO, now bedtime isn't until 8/830 and he still wakes up at 630, occasionally he sleeps until 7. As he gets older, his sleep needs decrease. We're at the awkward stage now where he still needs a nap but when he takes one (especially a 3 hour one), he goes to bed later and later. He sleeps a lot better and longer at night without a nap but I'm not ready to give it up, yet :silly:

@luckypenny: This has always been our problem with LO! His night sleep was always so awesome, and naps have been crap! I always felt like I was trying to fight him to take a nap. We had a small stretch when he did well, but even now, he sleeps only when he's home with us...not at day care.

@luckypenny: Oh yeah that's early. I'd even try 11:15. But it's likely temporary? Ben was able to push back his nap to 12-1230 once he adjusted. The going back to sleep was just good luck on our part, not something I did. He naps less now than he did even just a month or two ago. Who knows.

@gilmoregirl: she could probably do 11 but isn't that just crazy early? she would have to have lunch at 10:30 LOL I let her fuss for 15 minutes but she didn't go back down. We did CIO for bed but i think it is so much easier at bedtime than for naps, especially falling back asleep.

@2PeasinaPod: luckily she has been consistent with a 6pm bedtime no matter what day sleep looks like since she was 6 months old. I just wish she slept as well during the day as she does at night :'(

@raintreebee: YES! THIS! WHY!?!?! lol

I would move her nap time earlier and move bedtime earlier too. It takes some time to make the transition.

I'd stick with it and I think eventually she will take longer naps. My LO was similar when he went down to one and now he takes almost 2 hour naps.

I'm in the same boat with my 17 month old! We tried to make the transition a few weeks ago, and it went terribly. Now trying again. We put him down at 12:30, and he didn't sleep at all for 45 minutes. So we are trying again at 2:30, which I know is way too late. On two nap days, he sleeps about 2.5-3 hours a day. On one nap days, he sleeps 45 minutes to an hour and is a complete terror!

Definitely stick with it. Try to stay as consistent as possible. So, if you're putting her down by 11:30 or noon, try to keep the same bedtime rather than putting her down early because she's tired. She'll eventually get the hang of it and sleep longer!

When we first transitioned, nap time was around 11:30 and he would sleep for a few hours. It was a bit of a struggle to get to 11:30, though, and Ben was waking up at 6:45-7 am at that point. So I'm curious if even a few minutes earlier might help her sleep longer? Is she super tired when she goes down for her nap?

He will still occasionally wake too early, but usually does go back to sleep if I leave him be for 10-15 minutes, so I think we just got lucky.

@beloved: @Alivoo01: we have kept her up as late as 1 but then I thought she was waking because she was overtired ? She goes to sleep very easily at 11:30 and would even still fall asleep for a nap at 9 if I put her down.

I would suggest pushing her nap time up a little bit at a time till its closer to like 12:30 or 1 so she exerts more energy in the morning requiring a longer nap.

It could totally be a phase, and for your sake, I hope it is! One thing to try is aim for a 5 hr window at her age. 5 hours from wake-up to naptime, then 5-6 hours from wakeup until bedtime. When we transitioned to 1 nap, his morning wakeup times were crazy so we stuck with the 5 hour window, which I read was about what they were able to handle, it worked well for us. At around 17 months it transitioned into set times. Good luck!

I would stick with it. I remember we had some rocky days when we transitioned to one nap. Is she sleepy at 11:30? Or, do you think stretching her to 12 or 12:30 would help her sleep longer ?

The post today on the blog reminded me I need to ask the Bees about L's transition to one nap.

L is a great sleeper. Puts herself asleep drowsy. Sleeps from 6pm-6am. Her two naps started to get shorter and shorter so we decided it was time to put her down for one nap. She is 16 months old.

We put her down at 11:30 after lunch and without fail she wakes up between 30-45 minutes and won't go back to sleep. She is exhausted. I know she needs to sleep a bit longer. Someone tell me this is just a phase and she will eventually sleep longer!!
