The Marathon is a convertible car seat and doesn't use the base system, unlike an infant carrier. If the Marathon is your only car seat, you just have to be careful that the car with the car seat is at home with your baby at all times, in the case of an emergency. For example, if you go out and DH stays home with LO, you take the car without the car seat, or take the car seat out of the car and leave it with him. Although the Marathon is very easy to install with LATCH, it is still a relatively heavy car seat to move back and forth between cars.

We'll be getting a second convertible carseat for DH's car b/c DD will need to go in both cars fairly often. If you think your baby will almost always travel in just one of the cars, then you're probably ok getting one carseat. Otherwise you will probably want two.

(For the infant seat we had one seat and two bases -- one in each car.)

We have 2 cars, and used one infant carrier and base. Whoever had the baby, got the baby car (Subaru, with the car seat base) and the other got the Jeep Wrangler for work.

We did use our infant carrier religiously for about 9-10 months- in the stores and restaurants. It was so convenient if he was napping, I could just take him in the infant seat wherever I needed. Using the convertible car seat is a challenge- if he falls asleep, he wakes if I move him. So I spend a lot of time reading in the car when he falls asleep.

You could also look at a second hand baby store for an extra car seat base, if you found you really needed one.

We've never needed an extra base for our infant seat. The carseat you chose will work for an infant, but it doesn't have a base. You probably will need to get the Britax infant insert as well, because convertibles don't really fit newborns that well, even though they say they do.

We had one infant seat and just use the seatbelt. We have two carseats for DD and once DS is out of the infant seat will be getting two more.

@sunny: OK, I gotcha. The stroller we got lays flat for infant use. I didn't really think about using the car seat as a seat in a restaurant or something. I'm planning on babywearing so I probably wouldn't use it much if that works out.

I guess I just can't imagine why we specifically would need two. We won't have any pick up/drop off situations. And I think the convertible seat can be used without the base so we can always just put it into the other car if we needed to for some reason.

@TurtleDoves: I also drive a 4wd SUV so my car is the logical 'home' for the seat.

@JerricaBenton: i'd just get 2 bases but I don't think the cases come separately for that model. Maybe consider changing the car seat?
I don't understand why anyone would *need* 2 car seats. I guess it would be a bit easier but not enough to validate the price.
We only have one seat and we only have one base but that's because LO doesn't go to daycare so it's not like daddy is picking DS up or dropping him off anywhere. DS is always with me and when my husband does go out with him, he takes my car. It's winter and I drive a 4 wheel drive SUV whereas my husband drives a 4 seater sports car. So, for us we only needed 1.

You can use the Marathon for your newborn but do you think you will want to use a stroller much? Most strollers are for slightly older babies unless you use the infant carseat with them.

The reason we chose to also get the infant carseat was because i wanted to be able to walk with her in a stroller and because I didn't want to have to wake the baby up every time we got in and out of the car. Oh and its her chair for her when we are out and about.

@sunny: LO is due in Feb and we have 2 cars.

Ok, I might be an idiot, but all we have is the convertible Britax Marathon. It says it is for 5-40 lbs, rear facing so we assumed that it was good for infants. Is it not??

We are borrowing an infant car seat and bases from my friends. Her son only used it for 4 months and then was too long for it. So basically brand new. So we have the car seat and 3 bases. Her IL's had one since they would do day care pick up once a week to spend time with him. We each will have one in our cars, even though we rarely drive DH's car on the weekends, and gave a base to my parents, as a just in case.

How old is your LO? And do you have 2 cars?

We have 1 infant carseat in my car (The kind that detaches from a base and clicks into a stroller) and we bought a convertible carseat for my husbands car so he can drive her around too. We will also get a second convertible for when she grows out of her infant carseat in a few months.

If your husband isn't driving around with her much you might not need one for his car. All the infant ones can be installed in cars without the base. The base is really just for convenience.

I had one infant seat (Chicco Keyfit) and a base in each car.

We both have a convertible car seat (which LO started using at 7 months) because DH handles drop off and I handle pick up at daycare.

I don't think the Marathon has a base system...you just have to install the whole seat everytime you change cars.

Do you have one or two car seats? We just have one as of now, but lately people have been saying we needed two. I had initially thought we should get two bases to make it easier but I don't think bases are sold separately for our seat (Britax Marathon.) I will be a SAHM and my husband has a very flexible schedule and is in and out all day if that makes a difference.
