I registered with Amazon almost entirely, but set up a small Target registry just in case someone shopping last minute or wanted to buy in store. It turned out only one person shopped at the last second. Most people who bought from Amazon still wrapped and brought their gifts to my shower.

And actually, we only got one duplicate and it was from the Target registry. I loved Amazon's registry and would recommend it. Target was a PITA because of their in-store vs online stock and the quick turnover of their stock.

I think you should register where you want, but expect more non-registry items from the last minute shoppers. With returns and duplicates, you might be looking at chasing down where items came from, and end up with store credit to use at BRU and BBB anyway.

@HabesBabe: That's a good point. I didn't realize there were so many last minute purchasers out there ;-) Maybe having a brick and mortar place for a few things isn't a bad idea...I just want to make it easy/convenient for people.

We did Amazon and BRU because I am one of those last-minute gift buyers, and it's too much of a hassle to go online, look up your Amazon registry, find something at Target that I want to buy, get it, go back on, mark it as purchased elsewhere. Not to mention, someone else could have bought it in between the time I looked at it and bought it.

I wanted to make it as easy as possible for my guests if they decided to purchase a gift for us, not just convenient for me.

I like Amazon because people can order stuff for you there OR take the suggestion and buy the item at another store. That said, I registered at Amazon and Target. Some people really like to go in to the store and choose things in person (especially older people) and some people shop last minute. I registered for duplicate items with the plan of returning/exchanging duplicates if I needed to. I actually did NOT get a single duplicate!

I did only Amazon and wrote a note at the top of the registry explaining that we weren't registering for a lot of staples, encouraging people to go "off registry" and that they could by in store and mark it on the registry. I was slightly concerned that it sounded "gift grabby" but if someone is looking at the registry, they are probably planning on getting us a gift. Here is what I wrote:

"Family and Friends, We are very excited to be welcoming our baby girl into our family this fall! As a first time parents, we did not add a lot of the "staples" (diapers, bottles, soap, diaper cream) because we have no idea what baby Reagan will like nor do we have the experience of some of you parents. If there is something that you think we need that we have not registered for, please feel free to go "off registry"...let's be honest, we have no idea what we are in for! Also, if you would prefer to shop in a store, Amazon has a nifty "buying this gift elsewhere" button that allows you to check off the item without purchasing through Amazon. Thank you for all your love and support!"

Like you BBB and BRU stuff isn't my style so I never even considered those and we did Amazon and Target. I knew a lot of people would put off buying gifts until the last minute so I liked having Target on there as an option. Most of our gifts turned out to be purchased from Target online in the end.

I did Amazon and BBB and I think people did about half and half. A lot of people did purchase last minute, plus people like to use the 20% off coupons. I did have two people use the 'mark as purchased' feature on Amazon. There is space to put a note on the Amazon registry, you could always tell them about that feature there for last minute shoppers. Or be ready for some returns if you get duplicates.

ETA: to answer your question it's not a faux pas! I did both to accommodate my parents' friends and older relatives, and a lot of them bought from Amazon anyway :)

I did Amazon only and it worked out really well. The only people who didn't buy off of the registry were my grandmother and the other women who are around her age that attended my shower. And that is mainly because they don't really online shop. Instead, they got me giftcards from BRU or just plain old cash. I was happy with either option!

You can create a registry for BBB or BRU online, so you wouldn't have to step foot in there.

I admit it, as much as I want to be prepared, I am so last minute it's not funny. I like having the option to pick up something locally.

@NorCalWayfarer: Anytime anyone mentioned an Amazon registry, I would be bummed because I like to purchase and wrap the gift and just wouldn't have time with ordering online. Until this thread I had NO IDEA you could mark something "purchased in store"! :)

We didn't have a BBB when I had DS and I hated going to BRU, too.

I did Amazon only and it was fine. Some people did use the "bought elsewhere" option, and I think more would have if it had been more specifically pointed out (i.e. the shower hostess mentioning where the registry was but that people were more than welcome to use it as a guide and mark things if they bought elsewhere). I also hate BRU and we don't have any BBBs here, so I wasn't keen to register at those stores.

@Mae: This is one of the things I was worried about if I registered at a brick and mortar store -- a lot of things aren't available in store (e.g. Target) or there isn't a store near people (e.g. BBB).

@snowjewelz: @Mrs. Chipmunk: @yoursilverlining: Thanks ladies, good to hear Amazon only worked out!

@rachiecakes: I may do that and just make sure what I'm registering for is actually available in store. I feel like some of the stuff is only available online!

I only did amazon and got what I registered for, along with tons of clothing, toys and books (which I didn't register for since people buy them regardless!). No one had an issue (that I know of) with our registry. Amazon shipping is usually 2-3 days and free for many people, so I think it worked out well.

I also don't like BRU and avoid it, and we don't have a BBB here.

If you actually want the things you register for, I'd register at BRU or target too. I did both BRU and amazon, but I registered for BRU online too and apparently not a ton of the stuff I registered for was actually available in the store where most of my family lives. Also apparently, most people shop the week of the shower when it is too late to order things online lol. So I got a lot of off-registry stuff. I don't really get it, personally, because whenever I'm invited to a shower I hop online and buy a gift first thing bc it takes like 10 minutes and it's delivered to my door and then I don't have to think about it. But apparently people really like wasting an hour+ driving to and from stores? hah

Is it weird to only register at Amazon and not at a brick and mortar store?

The only people I know who don't use the internet are my two sets of grandparents, so my mom was just going to tell them to get me anything from the Nordstrom's baby section.

I'm just thinking now that some people may want to buy something from a brick and mortar store and bring it to the shower? I'm not sure what I'd put on that registry since everything I want I can put on the universal Amazon registry.

I'm also not registering for any toys, clothes, or books but would be happy to receive these as gifts -- I just know people will buy then regardless of whether I'm registered for them or not. I'm also planning on doing the thing where you ask for a book in lieu of card at the shower, so I'm hoping people will bring some fun books.

Help Bees! Is this okay or am I making some sort of fax-paus?

I don't know if this matters, but I have an aversion toward BBB and BRU -- they always raise my blood pressure when I step foot in them so I generally avoid them.

ETA I hope I'm not sounding gift-grabby in this post. I don't expect anyone to buy anything for us, but know I have very generous friends and family who would like to buy us things.
