S runs super hot, so having him wear onesies under an outfit would be akin to torture! He would be miserably hot.

That was so rude of her to say, I would've shot her the death look and said something equally offending about her parenting style...

I'm not a first time Mom, and I use a onesie whenever possible, I hate the look of her diaper sticking out. She doesn't have one on today because it's in the 80's and she gets hot, but in cooler weather you betcha!

Ugh, that was a bitchy comment. What exactly is there to "learn" that would change whether you put onesies under clothes at this point?

I don't put them because my lo gets overheated easily, but I think it's a good idea.

I do! LO is almost 17 months and I'll probably do it until they stop making onesies that fit her. I don't know why, but seeing a belly or a diaper hanging out bugs me!

I can't really understand why anyone would do this except for warmth. Just don't get it, honestly. But I would NEVER say that out loud to someone unsolicited. How rude.

If I had a list of the things that people told me 'oh first time mom, hah, you'll knock that off soon', it would be a mile long. Extended breastfeeding, feeding mostly whole foods, pledging never to yell - man. And here I am, never having yelled, never having fed a chicken nugget, still breastfeeding. And there are probably plenty of things that I've let slide, too, but still. It's just so rude of people to assume that you'll eventually 'learn better' than to do some thing that you've consciously chosen to do. So arrogant and annoying and irritating.

Nope! I'm a first time mom but I like onsies under things too. I do not like diapers and bellys hanging out. If you want that for your kid, that's fine. In the summer it's a different story, but I tend to lean towards onsie sets or one piece sets for the summer anyway. I'm all for the onsie!

I don't always, but I've started to now that our son is more mobile. I don't want him to get a belly rash from rolling around on the carpet with his t-shirt riding up.

I was just thinking about this the other day since I'm starting to dress K in separates. We did layer a onesie under her sleepers as a newborn bc it was colder and to protect her umblical cord stump. But now I think it'd be too warm most days to do the onesie under (we are in So Cal). And what do you do with the sleeves? Seems extra bulky. I was going to go look for a cami kind of onesie.

I purposely do not buy t-shirts for him because of this...or else I would have him wear a basic white onesie underneath. In the fall/winter, he always wore a onesie under a long sleeve shirt or sweater.

@red_seattle: It wasn't always easy, and some days, I picked my battles! We went through a period where I had to do diaper changes standing up and I got pretty good at also snapping the onesie shut by feel only. There were also days where just the longer tails of the onesie tucked in were good enough!

I also made some of my own "onesies" using toddler sized turlenecks and ironed on cut bottoms from old/stained/outgrown onesies. They were fabulous under overalls and they function like a shirt/onesie in one!

That's pretty rude to say. I don't get why the general public thinks it's ok to be condescending to 1st time moms, or to make any disapproving comments on any choices a mom makes (safety issues aside).

As for us, I put onesies on under X's outfits until he was 4 months old and it got warmer and he started rolling back to tummy. As he got older (and we started doing more EC and he got more squirmy) I started to hate onesies and overalls. Too much hassle-- it became too frustrating to try and get those on X around 6 months. Plus, they're not really conducive to ECing. But the epic battles over getting dressed when onesies or overalls are involved is the bigger reason I dislike them.

@Looch: how do you get LO to wear onesies every day for that long!? At 18 months, when X wears onesies, overalls, anything with snaps, it's a battle bc X wants to do it all himself. And he's so squirmy that when he doesn't care about doing it himself, he's focused on playing with something -- usually across the room -- so I have to pin him down (there are tears & tantrums) or I have to crawl after him snapping snaps as he walks.

I'm not a FTM and I do this as long as she will not be too warm with the 2 layers. It's still cool out right now so I'll do a long sleeved shirt with a short sleeved onesie underneath. I do it for the exact reason that you say. I don't like her belly or back hanging out either.
