@mrsbookworm: Oh my goodness, that's so great to hear! You kind of just made my morning. I am going to speak to our ped (who is also my LC) this week but I feel very reassured.

I think I'll keep offering more frequently to try to keep up supply, but I might stop Freaking. Out. :)

Thanks all!

My LO is the same age and he nurses between 3-4 times per day. I asked the lactation consultant who runs my baby group about it and she said 3-5 times per day is perfect for this age. She said as long as you don't drop below 3, you're fine. Hope this helps!

@mjane: hmm - can you add in a late afternoon nursing session? I don't really have any other advice as my LO is still nursing 6-8 times a day at sixteen months!

i was nursing about 5 times a day at that point. i would just keep offering after both naps because she could be uninterested now, but pick it up later. good luck mama! if you're following her lead, i think that's a good way to go. feeding has always been my biggest concern!

@mjane: My LO is only 6 1/2 months old and is still a boobaholic so I don't really have any experience with this, but could you pump and try to get her to drink BM that way (out of a bottle/sippy cup/straw cup)?

@Adira: Hrm--thanks! For me it's not worth it to pump... but if I feel like adding a session I might try doing it as soon as I pick her up from her nap (we usually do a diaper change first).

@mjane: I can only nurse Xander when he's just woken up for a nap or right before a nap (that's what that 9:00 a.m. nursing session is)! Otherwise he'll bite me!!!! Also, it's totally possible she's getting enough milk from those three sessions. I know that my boobs have pretty good storage and he can probably get 6-7 oz from them, so in theory, three sessions of 6 oz would be enough I think.

If you can't get her to nurse more and you'd really like her to have more BM, could you pump and offer her BM with her meals?

@Adira: Interesting, thanks! How did you get him to willingly participate in those extra sessions? When I try to get her to nurse more she just pushes me away, even if we're in a dark, quiet room, etc. I'm also worried about my supply and have started drinking mother's milk tea & fenugreek this week... ugh. Just when I felt like we were in a good pattern with nursing and solids...

@Ms.SK: The opposite approach to what? I have always followed her lead with solids :) She is generally very interested in them and rarely stops meals of her own accord. I am definitely familiar with the idea that food before 1 is just for fun... that's why I'm surprised at this turn of events! Thanks for your input though... it's something to consider (dropping meals).

By 10 months, Xander would've been perfectly happy nursing only 3x/day (and he did for about a week), but it was affecting my supply, so I forced him to go back to nursing 4x/day!

When he was nursing 3x/day, our schedule went something like this:

6:00 - nurse
8:00 - breakfast
12:00 - nurse
1:30 - lunch
4:00 - nurse
5:30 - dinner

But to force him to nurse more, I changed our schedule (loosely) to this:

6:00 - nurse
9:00 - nurse
10:30 - breakfast
12:30 - nurse
2:00 - lunch
4:00 - nurse
5:30 - dinner

I also try to give him a couple ounces of BM with his dinner in the hopes of getting a little more in him!

@Kemma: I am planning to be fully weaned by 15 months (when I go back to work & school full time)... I had assumed I'd still be nursing at least twice (morning and night) around a year, and then drop off those two feedings over the next couple of months.

I take the opposite approach in that I felt for my twins, food before 1 was just for fun! Do you nurse at night? Are you nursing before offering solids? I wouldn't feel comfortable with the twins nutrition at that stage only nursing 3x per day. At a year we were nursing in the morning before work, they had 3 bottles while I was working, nurse when I got home, before bed, 10-11pm, and 2 times at night. If it were me I would cut the solids way back until they were nursing more and slowly introduce the solids back.

Some babies do nurse less around 9-10 months but pick up again as they get closer to a year so it could just be a developmental thing. Are you planning on weaning at twelve months?

@sandy: that is reassuring! google is freaking me out... all sorts of posts on Le Leche League about how disastrous and unhealthy so few sessions are and how such babies are doomed never to succeed in life :) Ugh. I should only ever read hellobee for this stuff!

The weird thing about my baby is that often she loves her solids but sometimes it's kind of a struggle and she won't eat much, so I'm really surprised that she's dropping a feed.

I went back and looked at our Baby Connect records and my LO was at 3 nursing sessions at 9.5 months. She loved solids and ate well and was always a healthy weight so I never stressed. She did go from 85th percentile to 50th percentile at her 12 month checkup but I attributed that her being more active. She was back up to 75th percentile at her next appointment

Baby girl is nine months last week and seems to be dropping a nursing session--we had been at 4 for a few months (morning, after nap 1, after nap 2, and just before bed) but she's lately lost interest in nursing her second nap. She does eat a fair amount of solids and she's definitely gaining weight (three meals a day, plus the occasional snack), but this doesn't seem like enough breastmilk from a nutrition standpoint... she's still such a baby!

What do you think--is this okay? If not, how on earth do you get a disinterested baby to nurse more?
