@Mrsjets: exactly. To , @mrslemon-lime: my idea of full meal is just something filling. Doesn't need to be a 4-course meal

@TurtleDoves: exactly! That's not to say that BBQ hamburgers, hot dogs and salads can't fill that quota though - I don't think it's about the cost...if that makes sense.

I'm a fan of feeding full meals, or at least "very heavy appetizers" which in fact could be a full meal (if it's in the afternoon.) My family my not expect it, but to me food is part of a celebration and I feel it's necessary to include it.

@Mrsjets: that's what my dad always said! He said: if they're bringin' gifts, were bringin' food. Bottom line.

I think any event that people bring gifts to should have a meal, not just snacks/hors d'oeuvres

I think it all depends on the time. I like to eat at meal times. If it's at two, I'm not going to wait to eat, I'd already have had my lunch at noon and would be happy with a snack. This goes for however far I travel to get there.

I don't think a full meal would be required but if not, a heavy selection of food should be provided. I don't think chips and a veggie tray would be enough but I have seen many parties where the appetizers add up to more then a meal.

I think it's a nice gesture, especially if people are not familiar with the area. I think I am certainly capable of finding my own food, but if I really think about it, if I drive 2 hours to attend your shower that begins at 2, I probably left my house at no later than 11:30. If I leave at 4, and have another 2 hours in the car, that's 6 before I am home. I would want to minimize the time away from my son as much as possible, honestly.

I feel like you only have to feed people during events that happen at typical meal times. For example 11-1, 4pm+. If you have an afternoon shower at 2:00, hors d'oeuvres should be all that's expected. Out of town people are perfectly capable of feeding themselves.

Just wondering if you think you owe it to your OOT guests to serve a full meal if they have to drive a bit of a distance or fly to attend an event: baby shower, baptism, birthday party.

The majority of our closest fam and friends will have to travel to attend baby events and while we will likely hang out with them during their visit and treat them I wonder if the actual event should be a full meal too. When planning my local-to-me wedding I was constantly told a cocktail reception would be rude because so many guests were cominh from OOT and "you have to feed them!" Having a full, traditional meal was part of the reason I didn't end up having a larger weddding.
