@cascademom: thank you! This made me remember that we will be going to an ENT for my daughter and they've been talking tubes so with that in mind it's probably best to do the low deductible again.

I'd personally go with 1 or 2. The cost difference between 2 and 3 for the increased OOP max isn't worth it to me. As for between 1 and 2, I guess it depends how risk adverse (or not) you are to gamble with the 500/year difference in premiums. I'd probably go with 1 personally. You just never know what's going to pop up with kiddos. Alternatively, I might choose 2 but put $ aside in an hsa or other account in case you need it for the deductible/OOP max.

I'd go for the low deductible one. If you have specialist appointments or surgery even remotely on your horizon or a number of immediate care visits for both you and the kids, I would want to hit the deductible faster. Between all of my ENT appointments and surgery, we hit the deductible. My surgery was covered 80/20.

Next year, we're looking at a vasectomy, possible sleep study, possible surgery for DH and a belly button fix for me. Hitting the deductible sooner is the best option for us coupled with trips to immediate care and other appointments for the kids.

@gotkimchi: Oh, okay! In that case, perhaps option 2 would be best?

My kids have asthma and food allergies and we've been to the ER more times than I care to admit, plus a hospital admittance and multiple Epi-Pens, so option 1 would be my go to! But it sounds like you guys don't have any health issues, so go with option 2.

I would look at what you anticipate in expenses next year. Approximately how many sick visits, how many speech therapy. You should have an idea from this year of what those cost. See if that gets you to the $2k deductible. It sounds like the big change in expenses, will be not having the major medical of the birth. If the "known" things get you under $2K, I'd likely save the little bit in premiums and go with the second option with the $3k deductible.

@Adira: we did hit the 2000, however that was from delivery charges for a c-section. I don't think we would hve hit it without that

@MamaG: not for visits. They all have a 500 copay for ER visit or hospital admit.

Can you afford the higher OOP max if disaster strikes?

Agree with @adira. If you come close to meeting the $3000 deductible, you would be better off having gone with option 1.

Did you hit your $2000 deductible though? Since the deductible is low, it would take a while to hit your OOP max after that. If you've already hit the deductible, I think it's probably safe to assume you might hit the $3k deductible too, so would you actually end up saving money? The $158/month will only save you $528 for the year. If you end up coming even close to that $3k deductible, you will have spent more.

I know we have some savvy bees out there! I'd like some opinions on my ins options

Option 1 - costs me 202/month. 2000 deductible. 4000 max oop. We pay 20% after deductible is met until oop max

Option 2 - costs me 158. 3000 deductible, 7000 max oop. We pay 20% again.

Option 3 - 136/month. 7000 ded, 10000 oop. Pay 40% after ded until oop max

All plans cover preventative care fully. It is for me and my 2 small children. I would expect mostly preventative appt with a few sick visits thrown in. This year I had the first plan and even with child birth, sick visits, and weekly speech therapy for my oldest we haven't hit our max oop yet. Thanks for you advice!
