@bhbee: I had a bad experience with trying to plan play dates last school year. No one took us up on it and my kid was bummed. :/ I hope he naturally makes some friends in this class. Thanks for the encouragement!

@caitcat: Open houses ARE chaotic! Ha! I think you’re right that he will get a better feel for it over the next few weeks when it’s actually moving at pace.

@hitchhiker: Oh my GOSH! You didn’t learn that until open house? That sounds so chaotic, I’m sorry. Do you live in a large district for your area or was it a funding issue? That is wild to me! But I’m glad it was a good year. :)

Echoing the “don’t worry too much” sentiments. When my DD1 started K, she knew no one, and we learned at the open house that they were doing a combined K (2 teachers, 50 kids). I about lost it. But it turned out to be a great year. I think first graders are still flexible enough to be open to making lots of new friends.

Both of my girls seemed totally overwhelmed at their open houses in new schools last year, but felt so much better after some "normal" days when there was more time to settle into a routine and absorb it all at a better pace.

As a teacher, open house days always felt a little chaotic to me. It's a great quick glimpse into the classroom and chance to meet the teacher briefly before the start of the year, but it's nothing like the kind of support kids will get (especially in elementary school) to settle into a new class as the year begins.

Good luck to you all as the school year starts!

It will get better!! Big hugs to you all. My oldest knew nobody in K and there were tears at the start but at that age they all became friends so quickly (and changed again the next year anyway). And my middle started 1st last year after doing virtual K - he knew a few people by sight but basically starting new. Took him a while to make friends but still a very positive experience, just a transition to start (he did love his teacher right away). Are there any grade level parent groups (like on fb or GroupMe or anything) where you could propose some play dates for classmates?

My kiddo had his first grade open house tonight. It’s a new school for him, and despite knowing a couple friends who were starting here as well, there’s no one he knows in his class. :/ Let’s just say our whole family was feeling a little less than excited after the event. Please tell me this is normal and that he will get more comfortable. :( It was a lot.
