DD has been walking for six months. I tried flip flops (with the ankle strap) on her last week and it was no good. She somehow figured out that she could pull the sole away from her foot and kept tripping intentionally.
Closed toes for us!

Close toed for sure. You should be able to find a pair of pedi peds that have openings along the foot for ventilation--I know they make them for boys. I would only put shoes on LO if he were going to be outside though, and even then we did robeez--something with a really really soft leather sole.

something like this maybe (these are firmer than robeez but still pretty soft).

@Pepper: I do have a pair of Toms for her. I'll have to see if they still fit. I doubt it though. R has only worn shoes outside of the house too. But we are going to a birthday party next weekend and I know she'll be crawling around and doing her thing!

My DD has open-toed sandals - this question never crossed my mind when we bought them! She doesn't wear them unless we are out anyway, at least.

Close toe! I feel like open toe is just a major hazard waiting to happen. DS is 3 and I bought him Keens for the first time this year. They have been great so far.

@swedishfish: Inside the house he doesn't ever wear shoes. When we go out, I put him in Toms or little sneakers. Would Toms be an option? They're kind of summery without being open toed.

We have closed-toe shoes for my little cruiser, but she really only wears them in situations where it would be totally inappropriate or unsafe to go barefoot. As long as it is safe, I just let her walk around shoeless and wash her feet when we get back home/inside.

Either way, make sure you get the correct size. LO's shoes were too big at first (she was early to cruise around/walk assisted), and she always caught the toe on the ground and tripped!

@swedishfish: I know what you mean. R has to wear closed toe to day care so I have been sending her in sneakers. But her feet are so sweaty. I don't know how they are going to be when it is 90+ outside.

When R was just starting to walk I wouldn't have put her in open toe sandals. She has been walking for almost 3 months and now I feel comfortable only for short periods. But if at the park I still do closed toe.
