Child safety bars. You can get removable ones (we take ours out of the window to install air-conditioning units each summer) - and I'm sure prettier options are available. They're less obtrusive in person than they look here.

I don't see why you couldn't install them at the top instead of the bottom if you prefer...

Too much city noise to leave her window open anyway, so no, her windows are locked. Luckily her room is the coolest in the house so if our room is comfortable hers is too. We do have a fan in there, and run the ac if it's hot.

I live in Texas so the windows are pretty much never ever every open. I wouldn't think twice about it if my kids were still in a crib but I might get nervous once they were able to move about on their own.

I never thought of this or feared this! My kid is still in a crib, so it's not much of an issue right now.

I'm assuming you have regular double hung Windows? I don't think they will be tall enough to get to the top of it? And get out? Even if standing on a chair.

When not hot enough for AC I do open their windows a crack and turn the ceiling fan on.

We have the exact same problem. I put window fans in the top part of the window and made sure kids were in cribs or unable to access it - like no furniture to climb up nearby. But honestly it gets so hot being the third floor that we mostly used our central ac on that floor.

We don't keep any windows open at night. Mentally I need the alarm set each night or I can't sleep, so all windows are closed. And we live in a great neighborhood. Plus it would be too hot with the windows open and the AC not on.

Old building, no a/c. The kid's windows tilt open at the top and they are both too short to reach the handle (it's at close to eye level on me). We leave them tilted open at night and use fans when it's really sweltering. We leave our window wide open at night but we are always very vigilant when the windows are open. I will close them when not in the room. We have a latch on one window that will prevent it from opening all the way, so I latch it when not in the room.

Do you keep the windows open in LO's room at night? All the way?

We live in an old house but we have new windows that open from the top or the bottom. If opened from the bottom you can put safety locks on and the window is only open a few inches. If opened from the top you can't lock them and there's no screen so it worries me if somehow it got open by the girls. We sleep on the third floor so someone coming in isn't my fear, just the girls safety with height. It's way too hot to have them shut though, but the cracked option isn't enough!

What do you do? Any genius solutions?
