@regberadaisy: You can try! But for what it's worth, this was the Samaritan's Purse headquarters.

Yup, I heard about it this year too and we packed a shoebox. We took DD with us to target and had her pick out a few things for a little girl in her age group. We plan to make this a yearly thing.

We also sponsor a local family for the holidays. But I like this too.

We're not religious in the least but it doesn't bother me that it's a part of a religious organization.

@Oxana: interesting. I was just thinking about volunteering next year when we were dropping off our shoebox. Hopefully it just depends on the church because it seems like drop off locations are hosted by local churches.

We're atheists, so we don't agree with Samaritan's Purse's efforts to proselytize. My DH actually tried to volunteer there a few years back, but they would have required him to sign a statement avowing Jesus Christ as his lord and savior, etc. I find it ironic, given that the original story of the Good Samaritan is about how a non-believer did good works.

We'd still like to send a Christmas box, so we chose Moldova, the poorest country in Europe. I think the median income there is $3200, and the winters are quite harsh. Most people there are Orthodox, so we've written to a bishop in the Moldovan Orthodox Church to ask if they can give us the address of a priest who can hand out the boxes we send.

Last week was the first I heard of Operation Christmas Child. Basically, you fill up a shoe box with toys and goodies for chidlren that most likely wouldn't receive anything otherwise. Did/ do you participate?

Typically, I attend one holiday event with toys going to Toys for Tots and will bring a couple toys for that. I like this program too.
