Make sure the height of the cubes is ok for a changing table. DH and I are 5'7 and 5'10 and having a slightly too short changing table was KILLING our backs. We were using the changing table on our PnP and it was really painful. After a couple weeks I had to order something taller because we couldn't take it.

I definitely think they look feminine. But I think it is more the metallic nature than the color. I would just go with matte gray bins. They would look much better in a boy nursery to me.

We have those shelves in both kids rooms. We just added them to LO2's room because we loved the way they've worked and grown with LO1. I don't think the silver is feminine in general, but I do think that particular nursery reads feminine with pink being the only punch of color. I think silver would look plenty masculine if it was mixed in with industrial touches (spaceships, trucks, etc). Nobody thinks chrome is feminine!

(FWIW, I don't personally worry about gendered decor concerns for kids. It's a neutral in a boy's room, so obviously it's for boys.)

I love bins, and I love the IKEA system too. I have it in my dressing room and I wouldn't hesitate to put it in my son's room as a changing table. I prefer bins to drawers, because when you need to keep a hand on the baby, it's easier to reach into a bin then open a drawer!

@Anagram: oh my goodness those bin prices are much better than the Serena & Lilly ones from the photo! You saved me a Google search for getting "the look for less." Thanks! The hairpin legs have a similar leg shape to my leading contender for the crib at the moment. I waffle quite a bit; thank you for the storage legs link too.

Ha ha! Alot of what you all have mentioned as far as LO taking stuff out on his own and stuff getting stuck under the shelves were things I debated internally. Ultimately, I'd like to put all of his clothes in the closet and just use the room itself for sleeping, playing, and reading. Easy access to fun is fine.

I don't think they look feminine. To me, they are definitely neutral, and could be used for a girl's or boy's room. We end up with toys under our couch, too. Whenever I fish them out DS gets really excited about them. But if they were left out, he'd get bored with them. It's part of our unintentional toy rotation!

oh and here are the little metal feet. I actually wanted the feet because we have a few odd size giant puzzles that we keep in the (big) boxes and they don't fit anywhere, so I slide them under the storage unit to keep them out of the way. Other toys do get under there a lot, but my toddler just reaches under and gets them out, haha. http://www.target.com/p/2-pack-metal-feet-for-cube-organizers-threshold/-/A-50253345

Here are some of the bins--all of these were in our store and look nicer in person. We have the gray patterned ones in a white storage bin. The bins are a great size and hold tons of toys. We use 3 shelves for books and puzzles and 3 shelves for storing Megablox, Magnatiles, Duplos, and Art Supplies.

I like the hairpin leg hack on the ikea shelf! We have the same shelf and use it as toy storage. The only downside with those little legs is that toys are going to get stuck under there and then be hard to get out. When it's flat on the floor, you don't have to worry about that.

This is just my opinion, so I think you should do whatever you want in the end, but I think the silver metallic is feminine looking. I think it has more to do with the metallic actually, as I think of boy decor as being more matte. I really like the idea of the storage cube though. That should give you lots of storage.

I think they would look lovely. A word of warning though - you cant put drawer locks on cube storage. This time next year, your 9 month old son's favourite game will be "crawl up to the cabinet and empty out the contents of every cube". You wont be able to leave him in the nursery while you nip to the loo or even turn your back - trust me, they're fast! If you're okay with this, or okay with rethinking storage when the time comes, go for it!

After much debate with myself (lol) and a couple vetoes from the baby daddy on other furniture pieces, I think I'll just go with the Ikea cube storage in the nursery. Technically he doesn't know about this idea either, but once it's up it's up! This will double as a changing pad surface too.

The first pic is my storage inspiration: (1) Poster sized art (although I may opt for a trio of framed animal prints), (2) adding hairpin legs for extra height, and (3) four metallic bins. The room will likely be fairly neutral overall, but if I add a bit of color it would follow the rag ribbon garland scheme in the second pic.

My question is, are silver storage bins feminine? We're having a boy. The room's walls are a light gray. Should I look for alternative bins in gold or another non-metallic neutral or other color?
