We have an Expedit 2x4 shelving unit and we did los closet from IKEA (not sure the name). I love that you can get the pieces you want...it's pretty customizable. We also did 4 of the drawer fronts in green to match our decor (the rest of the furniture is white). The unit we got also has a toy chest which is great.

We have the Gulliver crib and a Hemnes dresser (the large low one) that we use as a change table. Both pieces are quite sturdy, and the crib is exactly what I wanted (clean lines, low, unobtrusive). We have used them for 9 months now and I am happy with them, and are going to get the Hemnes sofa table and add a backing to use as a bookcase.

I've done really well with Ikea dressers. I often find that their bottom-of-the-line pieces are pretty obviously bottom-of-the-line, but that the stuff a step or two up is much less obviously Ikea. We have Malm dressers and nightstands in our room and love them, and we got a Nyvoll dresser for the baby's room that looks great. (I can't speak to its durability, since baby hasn't arrived yet...) We have kitchen chairs that have held up well, a tv stand that is just fine (but somewhat new), and that's al the furniture I can think of for now.

I found that what's hardest on Ikea or other cheap furniture is professional movers. When I moved myself, everything stayed upright and my cheap furniture lasted fine. Professional movers seem to assume that furniture is sturdy in any direction, so they'll turn dressers/bookshelves/whatevers on their sides, and that damages the cheap stuff. But if you're planning to stay put for a while, go for it!

I didn't get any Ikea furniture for the nursery but I have had several pieces in the past and for our current entertainment center. The thing with Ilea furniture is you better be or have someone who can really assemble the pieces perfectly. No one I ever had help me could get the doors or drawers to line up perfectly straight. Even now it drives me batty and I'm always trying to adjust one door to be straight.

Many pieces in our house are Ikea, and I love them. We didn't use them for our crib or changing table/dresser (probably should have and saved money), but I plan on using them for all of his toddler furniture.

@lawbee11: i wanted to get the monte joya rocker ($900!!) but my senses returned quickly! I definitely have to prop a pillow against the wooden arm frame to protect LO's head, but it is still quite comfortable. The only negative is that the seat is deep, so you can't get out quickly/easily. I practiced at the store, and felt that it wasn't a big issue for me.

We have the Sundvik because it seemed sturdier than the Gulliver, but if I got a do-over, I would have bought the Gulliver instead. It fits the bumper I got (yes, I know they're no longer safe). Plus I think they're both sturdy. The Gulliver got great reviews vs. all the more expensive brands.

@lawbee11: we got the hensvik crib, and it was sturdy. I didn't go with the ikea mattress. I preferred to splurge on the mattress (which i think is more important than the crib) and it fit in the crib without any problems.

I also got the rocker, and i find it really comfortable! Maybe it's because i am short? I like that i don't need a footstool.

@lawbee11: I have the Gulliver, but it's almost the same size as the Sundvik. We don't have an Ikea nearby, and didn't want to pay to have an Ikea mattress shipped in addition to the crib, so we bought a standard mattress from BRU. The mattress was only like $50, and it fits perfectly.

@lawbee11: We got in Ikea mattress because it was cheap and easy! It's one of the middle of the road ones--seemed like a good compromise between luxurious and super hard. Definitely take a look at the samples in store; the options are all really different.

On a local moms board, someone posted that she returned her IKEA crib bc it didn't take standard size mattresses. It does take a standard size mattress. The problem is all manufacturers seem to vary by 0.5-1". You just have to check the dimensions and make sure that the crib/mattress combination you've selected will work.

Love our Ikea nursery! Only issue we had was the changing table only fits ikea's inflatable changing pad which is not very cute.

Oh, and I bought Ikea mattresses, too. Be careful which one you get, though. Some are very soft (almost feels like a sleeping bag) and have no springs. I've read it's safer to have a firmer mattresses, so we got the one with springs that felt more like a "real" mattress.

We got pretty much all our nursery furniture at Ikea. Here's a post I wrote about what pieces we got:
http://www.hellobee.com/2012/10/31/furnishing-a-nursery-on-a-budget/

We just assembled everything this week, and I'm very pleased. The cribs look super cute, and they feel sturdy. I will say that when I was in the Ikea store the cribs seemed a bit less sturdy and the white ones were kind of dingy looking, so I was very relieved that they turned out so good. Just keep in mind at the store that everyone and their dirty fingers has touched them, leaned on them, etc.

The dresser we got was unfinished because I wanted to paint it and use material on the drawers (future blog post coming on this once I finish it), but the rest of the furniture we got in white.

We have the SUNDVIK crib and love it! We also have the regular HEMNES three drawer dresser as a changing table. We have the eight drawer dresser in our bedroom and plan to just use the whole set when we move out of our apt and into a house. At that point we may need more storage for the baby. I have another HEMNES dresser that has held up for almost ten years so I am pretty happy with the quality. Finally, we have the big EXPEDIT unit in LO's room but that is only because it was an office before a bedroom and we have no where else to put it all. I actually really like it for storing LO's stuff!

We have the Gulliver, and it is extremely sturdy. I'm not sure why others have said it doesn't seem stable, because it seems incredibly stable to us - just as much, if not more, than the $500-$600 cribs we checked out. My husband actually stood in it, and it didn't budge! Very nice for $100!

We have a 3-year old IKEA crib (SUNDVIK) that is a hand-me down from my niece. It is plenty sturdy. We also have an IKEA changing table, which is also plenty sturdy. It's all in how you put it together.

I would prefer not to spend an arm and a leg on kids' furniture since it takes so much abuse. I know when I was a kid I took crayons to all my furniture to "make it pretty."

We have a TON of Ikea furniture and have never had a problem. We might go that route for our LO since we don't know what our future, unbought home (aka apartment/condo) will have space for. It doesn't always hold up the best moving but otherwise is good!
