@dc yoga bee: oh shoot I’m so sorry! I just read the original post haha. I didn’t realize it had been bumped! So I just read your bump. The risk of pre-eclampsia is MUCH higher in first time pregnancies/deliveries than subsequent ones. Soooo I would wait until 40 weeks to be induced!

@QBbride: Stillborn hadn't even crossed my mind! It's really for the likelihood of pre-eclampsia again. My midwives won't let my pregnancy progress past 40 weeks since it's high risk pregnancy.

@bees_knees: It sounds silly but I'll never have the whole "water breaking I'm in labor" outside a controlled environment experience. This is 100% our last baby so it feels strangely odd to be like okay- let's pick this as the"end date." And yes, I know induced on February 26 does not mean I'll have baby February 26. My last induction took three days!

@dc yoga bee: I naturally went into labor with DS1 at 40+2. Had elective inductions for DS2 at 40+3 and DS3 at 39+1. Whenever we have a 4th, I will choose the elective induction again! Everything went smoothly, and there is interesting research talking about 39 weeks being the “ideal” time to be born (I believe an article is reference above)

What is making you hesitate? When I scheduled my inductions, I was almost...ashamed?...because I felt selfish. But a) there are actually *positives* to being induced and b) if there is any time to be selfish, it’s when you are pushing a human being out of your lady bits. Just sayin.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

No, I wouldn’t. Yes the risk goes up, but it’s very small to begin with... so it’s not like it’s suddenly this huge # of stillbirths. You know baby will come between now and 42 weeks, so I’d just wait a bit longer!! My induction was so traumatic compared to my natural birth.

@dc yoga bee: I was induced for both of my kids. Both bc of my age and bc of my blood pressure. I was sent to be induced w LO1 unexpectedly and then I was a scheduled induction w LO2. Both of mine were long and miserable. No joke... my body just wasnt' ready for them to come.. so it took a long time to get it moving. They had to use foley bulbs for both. Once it got going though it was very fast.

@dc yoga bee: I'd go for it. I've been reading recent stats about 39 weeks being the ideal time for various reasons. If you google "39 weeks induction," you will find a lot of information. Here's just one: https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/induced-labor-39-weeks-may-reduce-likelihood-c-section-nih-study-suggests

@LCTBQE: @Beehive: @mediagirl: @mdf106: @bhbee: Thanks for chiming in! My previous induction was for medical reasons (pre-eclampsia) and while it took three long days it went fine. On the other hand, my SIL just had a failed induction but it was her first baby at 40+1 and not for medical reasons. The midwife said it would qualify due to history of pre-eclampsia and high risk pregnancy. I have my next appointment with MFM on Monday and will ask their opinion as well.

@dc yoga bee: I had a great elective induction with #3! I didn’t want pit and got by with just water breaking after cytotec didn’t help. I think after one vaginal delivery odds of a good induction are pretty high.

I was induced at 39+1 with my second after a previous vaginal birth. I was induced because of suspected large size. It was much easier than my first delivery. My induction started early morning, and I gave birth around dinner time, so I did not lose sleep because of labor, which really helped my energy level. I also really liked that my ob was the one to deliver the baby. The baby was slightly jaundiced, but nothing that wasn't helped by nursing in front of an open window, and we have a strong history of jaundice on both sides. I am pregnant with my third, and would agree to a 39 week induction again.

@dc yoga bee: I'm getting over a 39 week failed induction, turned emergency c-section. It's a long story but everything was going well until the baby's head was just stuck and wouldn't move down any more. OB even tried to move her head with a vacuum and she didn't budge. It was less than ideal. That being said, I was induced for medical reasons.

@dc yoga bee: yes, desertdreams88 posted the study your midwife is referring to a few months ago and when I mentioned it to my OB's they said it was super valid--reading it encouraged me to ask for an elective induction for my second pregnancy. I had a normal full term delivery for #1 and asked for the 39-week induction for #2 (mostly for planning reasons, somewhat because of the article)--they couldn't give it to me then because the hospital was too busy, but they scheduled it for my 40w/due date. When I got there I was already 3cm and having irregular contractions (which I'd been having for weeks). The induction was incredibly smooth and easy, I had an epidural put in before they started the pit and literally felt no pain at ALL aside from the anesthesiologist placing the spinal tap. baby in arms 5 hours later, hardly any tearing, the entire thing was amazing. It was so wonderful I honestly felt like I was cheating.

@dc yoga bee: I shared my story above, but I still highly recommend it (and with severe hyperemesis, no question!!). One reason they were willing to induce me was that I had low Papp-A, which can sometimes lead to issues (including pre-e) - at least, that was the reasoning they used, and the hospital approved it. Good luck with your decision, it's a tough choice but nice to have the option.

Bump. Any recent stories with this? Copying from my due date thread.

I'm 31 and my midwife said since this is not my first, they know I can have a vaginal delivery because I had one before with my induction due to pre-eclampsia, the research is favorable for an induction at 39 weeks to prevent pre-eclampsia again. I'm at a higher risk having had it with my DD. She also said it would be the kind thing to do with severe hyperemesis lol.

I had elective inductions with both of my LO's and they were both great. DS was 39+1. DD was 39+4. Both 7 hours from Pitocin to delivery.

I was at least 3 cm dilated with each which I think helped because my body was more 'ready'. I would be more scared about it if I hadn't been dilated/effaced at all. (just fear of it taking longer / being a harder delivery).

@CatchAFallingStar: I forgot to mention.. although generally I'm not against getting induced at 39w... I wouldn't do it right at this moment, just because I'd want my LO to stay in through as much of this cold/flu season as possible. (My middle child had a cold/virus at a month old and had to be hospitalized for all the testing that comes with a newborn with a fever, and we're still not out of the woods yet with LO3 and trying really hard to keep her from getting sick yet.) My LO was born in December and there has been a lot of staying home (and stir crazy kids too) because everyone around us is sick, and when my older LO (our middle is still home) brings something home it's a mad dash trying to keep it from spreading. Just food for thought.

I was induced with my second at 39 weeks 2 days, it was a great decision! I had severe swelling, like gaining 1-2 pounds a day in water weight both pregnancies at the end. I was glad to not have another week of swelling and weight gain and the induction itself was smooth, calm, and easy! I got pitocin, had my water broken a couple hours later, got an epidural right towards the end, and pushed baby out in five easy pushes. I would do it again 100%! Also the logistics of lining up care for LO1 were so much easier with it scheduled.

Both my boys were born at 39 weeks exactly. I was 34 without ds1 and 36 with DS2.

DS1 he wasn’t moving as much by 38 weeks and then my water broke with no contractions at 38w5 days and we went to an induction that failed and ended up with an emergency C section after 36 hours. He ended up having the cord wrapped around his neck and was stuck in a crevice in my pelvis and would never have come out if I had tried to force a vaginal. Honestly he probably would have died.

DS2 we elected a repeat section at 39 weeks and it was smooth and perfect.

Both kids were fine other than jaundice and reflux which runs in our family.

I’ve been reading that there’s an increased risk of still birth with later gestation in women over 35. My doctor didn’t mention that. That makes me lean toward having the induction. But, I also know there are risks associated with induction. So, it’s just all so confusing!!

@CatchAFallingStar: I was given this exact same choice for my second, and agonized over the decision as well, especially since my first birth went very smoothly without any intervention. I decided to go for it and was induced at 39 weeks 2 days. I'm very glad I did - the induction was easy peasy, and I understand that an induction for your first and an induction for subsequent births is totally different. For me, I was glad to have my daughter out and not worry about late term pregnancy anymore. It was also wonderful not to wonder when I would go into labor and scramble to get someone to look after our son. She was a very good size, a few oz bigger than her brother - 7 lbs 12 oz. The induction itself was totally fine - a little cytotec overnight (which didn't do much), then the doctor broke my water in the morning and started a little pitocin (after an epidural), and I had her a few hours later.

Unless there is some sign that your age is having a negative effect on the pregnancy (low fluid, small baby, etc) I wouldn’t induce prior to 40 weeks. My son was born at 38 weeks (my water broke but they had to give me pitocin to really get things going) and he was so small and nursing was a struggle for a while.

I was electively induced at 39w5d with DD2, I had had a smooth delivery with DD1 - so I was given the option by my Drs.

I had a great induction, started at 9am, DD2 was out at 3:45pm. I should note I was 3.5cm and 80% effaced at the start of my induction.
