I mean, I had an emergency C-section and started breastfeeding immediately, god knows I was pumped to the gills with drugs. My guess is you'll be fine to continue nursing.

@Mrsbells: no advice, just wanted to say good luck! I hope you have a speedy recovery. I just had my wisdom teeth out on Friday (1 surgically removed, two pulled as they already erupted). Recovery hasn't been too bad, just make sure you ice the first day! 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off. I have this ice pack and it worked perfectly for my jaw.

Agree with checking with Infant Risk. People tend to be overly cautious about breastfeeding but most meds are actually considered fairly safe. Kelly Mom suggests triazolam may be fine for breastfeeding. I did have a root canal while breastfeeding and was just numbed. When offered the option for a Valium before or strong pain meds after, I always decline whether breastfeeding or not because I don't do well with strong medications. I just took ibuprofen for several days after the procedure.

I wasn't breastfeeding when I had my wisdom teeth removed and I did end up with a dry socket (ow!) but I took one dose of the pain med I was prescribed and didn't take any more due to the strong side effects. I don't remember having issues with just taking ibuprofen, but I know people have really different results from that surgery.

I didn’t have oral surgery but a surgery were I was under general anesthesia when DS was 3 weeks old. The anesthesiologist said it was fine to breastfeed once I was awake and ready (I couldn’t bad I was in the hospital overnight and DS was at home). Then I was on antibiotics for a week and could breastfeed.

@JCCovi: that’s interesting! During my last colonoscopy i had twilight sleep I think (is that the same?) and I think I Just had to wait 4 hours or so.
I was in the hospital a few months earlier and they did tell me to pump and dump on some pain meds, but still not for 24 hours. Would be nice if they could just have a set standard!!

Mine wasn’t oral surgery but I had a colonoscopy while breastfeeding which included waking anesthesia (appear to be awake but I have no memory of those events). I had to pump and dump for 24 hours.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out while breastfeeding! I had a really bad impacted tooth that suddenly got badly infected and needed to be put under. I talked to a friend who is a doctor about it. They said there is usually a blanket rule about pain meds and breastfeeding (as a PP mentioned they just usually say don’t do it) but really there are actually lots of pain meds you can take that are completely safe. I went to an appointment with the research and my doctor friend’s recommendations and they agreed. Let me go check and see if I can find the info.

@Mrsbells: i did have iv sedation, but it was well before I had kids so I didn't get any advice about breastfeeding. I give props to people who do it awake, no way on my end

@Mrsbells: I think I would have been ok if I had a younger LO- probably would have tried harder to keep my supply. And I would for sure get a second opinion on how long to not nurse for. The dentist said I shouldn’t even BF while taking Advil which obviously isn’t correct!

I too ignored my wisdom teeth for years and then had to have the surgery when it caused issues. Good luck!

@Mrs. Champagne: yeah I wish I could postpone it til LO is older, right now he is only 2 months old, however I have put this surgery off for years and now have a broken tooth and other issues that came up in pregancy. I hope I can keep ounting regularly even if I need to dump it for that 1st 24 hours

I had IV sedation and they told me not to breastfeed for 24 hours. My LO was almost 1 so my supply was dropping, but the meds/feeling like crap really tanked my supply. It was basically the end of nursing (which was ok because I was ready to wean).

Did you talk to a lactation consultant? Often pharmacists and doctors will both tell you stuff isn't safe for breastfeeding when they just don't know. There's very few things that are actually unsafe for breastfeeding

Good luck! I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed, including 2 that had to be broken because they were sideways. I never took anything stronger than Tylenol 3 and I was totally fine. Couple days of eating only mush but it wasn't too bad

What was your experience with all the pain meds and antibiotics? How long did you have to wait after surgery to continue breast feeding normally? I am having multiple wisdom teeth removed and One of the meds I have to take right before surgery is triazolam which isn't safe for breastfeeding. The pharmacist said it can take 25 hours to be fully out of the bloodstream. I would hate to have to dump all that pumped milk. What was your experience?
