@Sams Mom: I don’t think I’ve used FTD so I’ll have to remember to try it!

@MrsBeluga: Oh yes, I’ve seen those! I’m usually too last minute to schedule shipping but I will have to try it next time I have an occasion I know about ahead of time.

You need to try FarmGirl Flowers! They are based out of San Francisco but ship across the country, honestly the most beautiful flowers ever! They do a handful of styles and in person they are just as stunning as the photo!!!

I've used FTD for anything I've sent across country or even out of town. I haven't had any problems with them the 5-6 times I've used them. The florist my husband used for all my bouquets and then we used for our wedding delivers locally for FTD, so that's how I found out about them.

I have two different approaches. If I am ordering something big I call a local florist and ask for an email address. I then sent them a word document with pictures of what I like, specific flowers I like, and flowers to avoid. Then I give a budget.

If it's something cheap I call a local florist and say "can you send something around $50 for a birthday that is in pink and yellow, has roses and daisies, and no carnations?" I've had a lot of luck that way.

I wonder if you can work with a local florist and ask them to send you a picture be delivery; is that too much to ask for? And just say you've been burned too many times and super weary.

I stopped ordering from 1800flowers, I believe I've tried Bouqs once or twice and not sure if I even found out how the flowers were. The last 2 times I ordered flowers, I did it through Amazon! I saw pictures of them and they looked pretty good!

@pinkb: Thanks for the insight! I understand about the substitutions for something of a similar size/value, it's just frustrating when there's nothing remotely similar. I have tried ordering directly with florists a few times and maybe I just haven't found good ones but my luck has not been much better.

(Also on the receiving end, a friend of mine ordered something for my Grandma's funeral and I'm not sure exactly what she ordered but they sent a wicker baby carriage with flowers in it and I'm certain that wasn't it lol)

I would say you are better off calling a little flower shop in the area of the recipient instead of the big online places. I would still look them up online to see their work. My sister has worked in flowers for years and the big online places just feed the orders to a local shop that accepts the orders ( not all places do. A lot actually choose not to because it allows them no creative input and can look bad on them for putting out a less than stellar product. Who would want their name attached to ugly flowers?) . Substitutions are very common and depending on the area the flowers u order might not be in season so they don’t look great even if u get what you order.

I agree this is a problem, and don't have a great suggestion. Maybe you could use a site like TaskRabbit to get someone to go to a grocery store nearby the recipient (Trader Joe's has great flowers!) and deliver them?!

@Foodnerd81: Oh that’s too bad! I have used Bouqs before and liked it but I’m not great at planning far enough ahead to remember to use them.

@Mamag511: I’ve not heard that about Amazonc I’ll check that out!

@JennyPenny: I’ve actually never used a florist local to me, I’ve just sent flowers to friends and family who live far away. But yes I agree I would never let my husband order me flowers lol!

@JennyPenny: that’s what I would do locally but I can’t give grocery store flowers to my MIL across the country. But I always tell my husband to do that if he wants to give me flowers (rare) don’t waste money on delivery. Picknout something pretty at the grocery store while he’s getting me bagels.

My husband has been burned every single time he’s ordered flowers online. He just does grocery store flowers now because he can see what he’s getting. It’s ridiculous what the online companies all seem to do :bummed:

I had similar negative experiences from online orders (like 1800flowers and Teleflora). A friend just told me that amazon sells fresh bouquets for delivery - I’ve gotten them twice and been really pleased!

I don’t know and that’s part of the reason I very very rarely send them! I went out of my way to order from bouqs.com because they get the flowers direct from farmers or whatever, and my aunt wasn’t home for the delivery and they didn’t leave it, came back the next day and they had clearly been in a hot truck overnight and were totally dead. She felt bad telling me but called the company herself to get my money refunded. I know that was just a one off bad experience with them, and I have sent others that were lovely, but it’s frustrating.

(Half rant but also for real)
I'm super frustrated because I've just spend days dealing with flowers I sent my in-laws for their 50th anniversary. I ordered a beautiful giant bouquet through teleflora that cost nearly $300 (totally crazy but my MIL loves receiving flowers and this was the whole gift and a big milestone.) The flowers she received were not arranged in the same shape AT ALL, were not in the specifically advertised vase, and were about 1/4 the size of the photo. They were also different kinds of flowers and different greenery, although I understand that can be more likely to happen with substitutions. Anyway I've spent hours on hold with Teleflora dealing with that and have finally gotten a refund.

BUT. I feel like this happens to me every time I order flowers and it feels like such a scam. I once sent someone 24 orchid stems and they received 12. Things like that. I've tried using all the different companies where you order online based on a photo and haven't usually felt they looked anything like the photo.

I've tried calling florists local to the recipient directly and not had much better luck. For a friend I ordered 2 dozen of her favorite flower in her favorite color which they assured me was no problem and she received a small bowl of white filler flowers.

Is there some secret to ordering flowers and getting what you order and pay for that I'm doing wrong??? I'm so tired of having to fix something after the fact when it's an expensive product that I'm purchasing.
