@bhbee: @Shantuck: @mrsbubbletea: @pinkb: @periwinklebee: @snowjewelz: @psw27: @Alba4: @youboots: thanks, ladies. it is truly incredible that this one selfless person saved probably 3-4 others. I wrote this because I have been surprised by the number of people who like it in theory but quietly don't want to do it themselves, out of disgust, vanity, religious hangups, or something else, I'm not sure. I hope for the most part that people our age are not going to be donors anytime soon because we're largely young and healthy, but people in the baby boom generation will be more likely to be, and that's something we can inform. I have a hunch based on something the coordinator implied that my dad's donor was an older person, which was certainly good enough for him.

@youboots: I am really sorry to hear that  I think it very easily could have been my dad's case, too. it seems to me that one's outcome on the list is not much more than supply and demand intersecting with dumb luck (like so many things).

Thanks for posting.

An extended family member passed recently waiting for an organ.

I’ve been a donor as long as I’ve had my license. So is DH. Good point on checking with parents.

@catgirl: that is wonderful for your mom  and yes two of my grandparents (in their mid-90s) gave their bodies to medical schools, we were sent the cremains when their semester was over and my grandma and grandpa were glad to have been of use.
@snarkybiochemist: @pachamama: to me this is an amazing miracle of science, charity, and humanist goodwill. My family is so grateful. The reason I wrote this is that the transplant coordinator told me that even if you’re registered on your DL or through your state’s registry, that next of kin makes or breaks it and it’s crucial that someone’s kids/spouse acts quickly. I had always heard that but never imagined before a few months ago that it would be relevant to me.

Organ donation is such an amazing gift and yes many conversations need to be had, including verifying that your next of kin will donate your organs. In many states even if the box is checked on your license they will still ask your next of kin and if they so no to donation then your organs will not be donated. So yes talk to your parents about their wishes (and get it in writing if its complicated) but also talk to your spouse and parents about your wishes.

So glad your dad got a second chance how terrible to think you'd be so far away. Here in New York when you register for a license you check a box and I believe you're all signed up for organ donation. I'm all about someone using my body parts. What use is it six feet underground?!!

So glad your dad was able to receive such an amazing gift.

Organ donation is so important. And while I know it can be an awkward conversation I agree with you that it is a critical one to have. Especially to what level people would be comfortable with donating, just organs, tissue, skin, eyes, etc.

While it's not the same as your situation my mom has an eye disease that would have left her blind by this point if not for cornea transplants. I feel so grateful someone made the choice to donate them so my mom can continue to see.

Also for people who may not qualify to donate, depending on how they die and condition of the body, it can be great to donate a body to medical research. My great aunt died this year and since we knew she wouldn't qualify for donation that is what she set up.

Hi, community. A couple of days ago my dad, who has been gravely ill in the ICU, was the grateful recipient of a new vital organ, without which he certainly would have died this summer. I am 37 weeks and halfway across the country, and my siblings and I honestly thought he'd die waiting and that I'd never see him again. He has another chance because someone decided to be a donor, and more importantly because their next of kin acted quickly and unsqueamishly to honor their wishes. Most of you are probably already registered donors yourselves, but this is a PSA to talk to your parents and anyone for whom *you* are next of kin to make sure that they are donors, so in the circumstance you're faced with making the decision, you can act with clarity. It's one of those unpleasant topics that can be put off indefinitely, but I hope you'll talk with your family about it if you never really have.

Per the transplant coordinator I spoke with, my dad's new liver came from someone who was likely older with his blood type, and I know their other organs went to additional people and gave all of them another chance. It's incredible. Organ donation does not have to come from a teenager in a car accident, as not all recipients need an organ to last for another fifty years, some only need it to last a decade or so.

Thanks for reading
