@sorrycharlie: There are so many things moms feel guilt over. Don't make your mattress choice one of them!

@stiffaknee: that is exactly what my concern was - feeling kind of like a bad mom for buying a non-organic mattress. I'm relieved that the regular mattresses are just as okay :)

I bought the colgate classica because it was reasonably priced ($150 with free shipping from Amazon..thanks to my amazon mom membership) and was recommended by a number of baby books, as well as being highly reviewed online. That being said, I didn't start reading about some of the potential "toxin issues" until a few weeks ago (I stumbled upon a website that talks about mattress wrapping and how some of the chemicals used in mattresses can cause SIDS) and, while I'm concerned about exposing my baby to toxins and want to do everything to keep her safe, I really think the least of my concerns is the mattress. I also read that you have to have a special prescription or order from your doctor to buy a mattress that does not have the flame retardant chemicals (which is, from what I read, could affect baby's breathing)

I think if you can afford and are comfortable spending the extra money for an organic mattress, by all means do it. But I would not feel bad if you chose to buy a non-organic mattress (and know that most moms-to-be are doing the same thing).

I wish our crib came with a mattress- that's awesome! But we have the crib and DH wants to set it up in a month or so, so assuming we get a mattress within 2 months, that's a good point that it'll have time to air out.

M mainly focusing on a firm one - just wasn't sure about the whole organic/chemicals etc thing. So many options!

@Mrs. Yoyo: I feel the same way.

Babies don't need a super soft mattress anyway. I wanted a firm mattress and I knew the one that came with our crib met safety standards. We have a convertible crib. The mattress will last us through the toddler stage and then it will be time to upgrade. It won't hurt near as much knowing that we didn't spend an arm and a leg on a crib mattress.

I figured the best mattress for our crib was the one that came with it, safety-wise. Not organic, no, but it had plenty of time to "breathe" before it ever hosted a baby.

I did not get an organic mattress. My own mattress is not organic. I dunno, I guess you could argue either way but I just made sure it was firm since that is the safety recommendation.

i got this. i liked the dual firmness - since i'm getting a convertible crib, i liked the idea of having 1 bed that transitions from infants to toddlers. and i liked that it was organic too.

I don't have insight from experience, but I went through the same thought process when looking at crib prices vs mattress prices. When I asked DH's opinion on going for a cheaper mattress, this is what he said to me.

DH: Put it this way, we sleep on a nice, comfortable mattress that wasn't cheap, right?
Me: Yes
DH: And our bed is a fraction of the cost of our mattress, right?
Me: Yes
DH: So why would you spend the money on a comfortable, good quality mattress for us but consider skimping out on that for the baby?
Me: Good point.

We're a ways off from making a decision, but Dh put it into a different perspective for me. I know a lot of people are satisfied with the quality of the crib mattresses from Ikea, so I definitely am still considering them as well as some others that have good reviews (like Sealy). Is there a way you can go and feel any of the mattresses you're considering? Maybe it will help you decide what is and isn't worth the price difference.

Can anyone offer some insight? Of course, I'd love to have a mattress with minimal chemicals, but..holy price difference. I just don't know if I can justify 200-300 on a mattress when there are some less than 100!

I know the organic ones are great..but are the cheaper ones good, too?
