@SugarplumsMom: I just saw this post and the first thing I thought was "ooOoo that is bad luck" from looking at the picture. Haha. So glad some mentioned it!

I am actually surprised it is in a cook book!

@littlejoy: I think it's a sweet gesture to make an Asian dish  You have to let us know how it turns out whenever you do decide to make it.

@SugarplumsMom: I noticed that too- the chopsticks made me wince because DH's fam freaked out when I did that when I first met them. Now I definitely know never to do that.

@SugarplumsMom: Ha. I wouldn't serve like that. :) I ended up making cookies (the host updated and said we did not have to bring an Asian dish, but rather SHE was making dumplings and sticky rice). Everything was really great. My daughter has been learning about Chinese New Year all month at her school, so it was great to show her more about it. She really enjoyed her red envelope & trying to say the HNY greeting.

@littlejoy: It looks like a fusion, Thai inspired dish. My only comment, is please do not serve it with chopsticks up like that - it's bad luck.

Yeah, the Vietnamese does use peanuts in their recipes. Looking at the recipe, I don't see it as an Vietnamese dish. Looks like hybrid or fusion of two or more Asian cuisines. It might even be an American dish with an Asian influence.

Oh, I don't think I've ever seen my mom buy a radish or agave nectar for her recipes.

Oh, the pad Thai rice noodles are pho noodles to us, but we also use the same noodles in other dishes. To me they are just flat thin rice noodles. I've used and seen all different types of rice noodles in Vietnamese dishes.

@regberadaisy: Vietnamese do use peanuts, though mostly for sauce and as topping. =)

Thai. The rice noodles used in pad Thai are used in Vietnamese cuisine. But I don't think Viet cuisine uses peanuts? That's more common in Thai.

It would be Thai or Viet. I've seen this dish served in both cuisines.

I would think that is thai based on the type of noodles the recipe calls for.

We are going to a Chinese New Year party tonight, and have been asked to bring a Chinese side dish. We're thinking of this pasta salad (photo & ingredients below). I can't figure out if it's Chinese ... I was thinking Thai because of the cilantro? I've been wanting to make this for awhile!!
