We're just starting out in our OT journey. My 4.5 year old was diagnosed with autism at the beginning of the summer and has been in speech for the past 1.5 years at school and 6 months privately. He also has a severe speech delay, sensory issues, and motor planning disorder. Mainly just subscribing to keep track of this thread :)

bumping this...

anyone else dealing with motor planning issues? he's funny - some things he's totally fine with. Like today, he did soccer class and did awesome. Followed multiple 3 & 4 point instructions, dribbling ball, scoring goals, tapping his left & right foot, etc. But then when it comes to pen on paper or some other things he will sometimes fall apart!

Any activities/books to recommend too?

@hellobeeboston: We still struggle with it to be honest. Although OT gave us great tools to help him manage better (and me manage better). A tool we use a lot with him in public is wearing him in a carrier so he has constant input. It really helps chill him out when things are crazy. I also find that he needs a lot of gross motor things to do everyday. We have a dedicated play space in our living room with play structure so he can climb and slide and jump. We also have a small personal trampoline in our basement. He is also getting to an age where we work hard on routine and better listening skills. It's hard like I said before. We are currently on break from therapy. We will likely start again after the new year. We just needed to simplify our life a little right now.

@hellobeeboston: Of course! I totally understand! I say the same thing. LO has a serious speech delay but I figured maybe he'll be a late talker but when 2 came around I knew it was a serious issue. You have time and I bet you you'll see so much progress quickly! Kids are sponges and with the best help it just makes it that much easier.! SI is special instruction, they kinda touch on everything!! And our SI is AMAZING!!!! She can get LO to do anything whereas his other therapist have a hard time.

Aww that's so great to hear and so important too! You want them to be super comfortable and trusting of their therapist! If you don't mind, keep me updated on your babe's progress. I love hearing about other's parents experiences with therapy. I don't have many people IRL who's children are in therapy.

@MrsRcCar: I admit I did attribute some of his 'roughness' with being a boy, but he also continually does it when we tell him not to and seems to seek it out. Especially being too rough with his little bro, he's not trying to hurt him, he's more just aggressively loving on him and it's too much.

@bubblegum: thanks! in some ways I really wish I started him sooner, as we've been talking about this for 6 months or so... but still glad we're getting going, and have 2 years before kindergarten! btw, what is "SI"?

My LO really took to the OT today, he didn't want to leave her! She was great, I think he'll work well with her! I'm looking forward to learning things we can do at home to help him out too...

Sounds like N. He needs deep input. Which is why he is rough with a lot of things. We worked with OT for a while. They gave us a lot of great heavy work options to help him focus. If I can find it I will send you a picture. Something he really enjoys is therapy putty with beads.

@hellobeeboston: Our 2 y.o has been working with two different therapist. OT and SI. Both since about July. One thing I can say I noticed was that LO is extremely different with OT and SI. I sat in on a session for OT and a session of SI one day. With OT LO "couldn't" stack blocks, "couldn't" do puzzles, etc. BUT with SI later that same day, did ALL of those things and more.

Point of my story is, sometimes the child could be more comfort with someone else than with person they're dealing with. Either way, I'm so happy you're doing everything you can to help your LO. I can't believe how many people are so against therapy, not on the bee but IRL. I had so many people telling me LO will do such and such when he's ready but I think us mamas know whats best for our children. So good job mama!

Hi all! Looking for stories about other mamas with kids in OT or who are working through sensory processing issues!

We just had our in-person evaluation with our OT today (she was great!) and we're going to move ahead to do weekly OT sessions for motor planning, sensory, fine motor issues for our almost 4 year old son.

They mentioned motor-planning when we did the first phone session, and it seems to make more sense now. Some of the sensory stuff they brought up I hadn't connected before. And some fine motor he's fine with, but he can't really draw very well - cant draw a person yet.... Also, he can be very rough, aggressively close doors, or roughly hug or tackle, etc... he also rubs his eyes/nose/face a lot which they noticed and i guess i never really connected before.

Anyone have good/bad/whatever stories to share about their OT experiences???
