@snowjewelz: We totally do lunch at 1045 some days! He's not a big eater, so after nap when he typically nurses a lot towards the end, he's not hungry!

@junebugsmama: Most of the time she's drifting off by 11 so we would need to feed her at 10:30.. I think we'll probably continue with big snack and lunch after. I think my goal is to eventually push her nap back a little bit to like 12, so it would make more sense to eat lunch at 11-ish.

@FaithFertility: Saturdays yes, b/c Sunday's we're always at church, I wear her for the whole nap... Tough for me but she'll do at the very least 11:30-12:30.

@FaithFertility: Thats one of my issues. Before with two naps, I wasn't too worried if I messed with one of his naps because I could always make up for it later. So when we do stuff, it either has to be early and home by 12 at the latest, or I try to force him down early and do something at 1.

I love being on one nap now! He finally takes a nice long one (yesterday 3 hours!) and we have much more freedom with our day! It was a little tough transition, but he was ready for sure! And I agree with a few PP that lunch before for us is key. We do morning activity, the more fun the better, and then rush home in time to wash up, have lunch, and get down for nap. If we can't make it out for an activity he would seem to need to go to sleep at 9-10. Otherwise, its up at 7, nap at 1130 or so, and then wake at around 2. Bedtime can get tricky because he gets so fussy around 5-6, but not ready for bed. He'll have a second wind and then to bed around 8.

@lioneyes: oh yeah I forgot to add that I have also successfully gotten him to go back to sleep once or twice. Which was a shock to me.
He's always been a solid napper, at least 1.5 hours, so I haven't had to try to get him back to sleep in ages. Now that he's on one nap (most days) if he wakes up after 1.5 hours I know that's not enough to take him to bedtime. Especially if he is waking crying, which he never does, I kno he's still tired. So I go back in and rock and scratch his head for a few minutes. He gets calmed down and I put him back and he sometime goes back to sleep. I was shocked it worked so is worth a shot for you :-)
Glad to find someone on the same transition at the same time as me :-) Moral support!
Forgot about time change! Hopefully that gets him on a noon nap easily!

@sweetiepie all last week he was still napping 9-10 (some days even 9-11) and then would be up until bedtime at 6:30 and he was fine! I would put him in his crib for "rest time" between 2-3, but he didn't sleep. but that schedule seemed to make him happier than having to stay up in the morning!

this week is half over, and then next week SHOULD be easier (time change ftw!) so i think we are getting there. he was happy to eat a big lunch at 1045, maybe i will try to put him back to sleep if he wakes up after an hour now that he's eaten.

@lioneyes: we are also 18 months and currently can't make it past 11:30 for a nap. He still easily goes down for a 9am nap if I let him, so I have to distract all morning to get him to 11:30. We do the park, some tv 😬, and then instead of lunch at 10:30 I do a big snack. Currently grapes, cheese and crackers. That will keep him satiated till he wakes at 1:30/2 and then we'll do a late lunch, Very light snack, early dinner and early bed.
Hoping over the next month or so I can keep pushing till 12/12:30!

@lioneyes: He will! I think I was just prepared for it to be bad for like a month, so any improvement from that made me happy!

The days she's home and she has fallen asleep before 11am, she'd wake up once or twice and DH would put her back to sleep. Maybe he's willing to be put back to sleep to get to a longer nap?

Good luck!! You can do it!!

thank you for this! I needed this today! LO is almost 18 months and a few weeks ago all of a sudden started taking very ong AM naps and n afternoon nap. Just started doing 1 nap a day at 11am (will move it to 12 next week with the time change) and it's been HARD! he is super cranky from like 930am on, and only napping for an hour. I am going to feed him lunch at 1045 today so maybe he will sleep longer if he's full. He has always been a great sleeper so I feel bad for him. Hopefully he adjusts soon.

There are so many posts about this so I figured I'd add our story in case it helps anyone!

DD was 14.5 months when we went down to 1 nap. And her sign was not fighting either naps; though both naps were getting a bit shorter than usual. The big sign for us was actually her fighting bed time. Her 2nd nap wouldn't end till 4-4:30 and she'd be up till 9-9:30 and still fight bed time.

So we bit the bullet and just moved her to 1 nap. She would literally pass out sitting there by 11am, and the first ~2 weeks were hard; her naps weren't getting that much longer so there were day she was up by 12-12:30 and she'd be out like a light by 7pm.

Now at 15 mo we're happy to say that 1 nap is going really well! Some days at home she'd nap for almost 3 hours! And she def is asleep by 8. She is able to stay up for 7 hrs between nap and bedtime.
