@.twist.: It'll happen. For me, once we got past the sleep issues and CIO, LO became a lot more fun. Everyone is getting sleep and it's better. Right now, the time change is messing with me. I keep waking up close to my alarm time by a few hours and can't go back to sleep. I'm not sleeping through the night right now. Argh. It's partly why I wouldn't mind being pregnant sooner than later to get those 15 months done with again.

@.twist.: We did it at 6 months with some urging from our peds. He asked about sleep and said it was bad. From there, we tried other approaches, but CIO extinction worked for us. His sleep is so much better than before. It's also around the time that sleep for DH and I returned where we could go to bed and sleep, then tend to LO. Having normal sleep again was a revelation.

@cascademom: how old was your LO when you did it? So glad to hear it worked for you, I am reeeeeeally hoping night two is, like, 100x easier. Haha

@.twist.: We did extinction CIO. It was the only thing that worked for LO. It totally sucked, but was worth it. He went from little sleep to 11-13 hours a night. Yesterday, I was afraid we would have a huge regression because he threw the biggest tantrum about getting ready for bed, but crashed so fast into deep sleep soon after.

@.twist.: We also had to do extinction, though LO was older at 11.5 months. When we went in at all it would just wind her up even more. But, the first week was hell. I think it was 2 hours the first night and at least 30 minutes of crying for the first week. Then slowly down to 2 minutes, and now she rarely cries for more than 30 seconds.

Aaaah! I'm reviving this thread. I just finished night one of the extinction method and it was so brutal!! I'm a bundle of nerves today. L is in the middle of his first nap for day one. I'm really hoping night two is easier than night one because I don't know if I can do that again. So glad I found this post as it seems this is not a popular method. :/

We're going to be doing CIO soon at a little over 6 months old. He got his shots on Friday and last night was rough, so by the end of the week we'll halt the crazy wake ups and add in a bottle of formula too.

Oh my goodness, I would not survive at 8 wake ups! We did a modified CIO and he gradually just set his own bedtime between 630-7, sometimes a little earlier. He was pretty sick a few weeks ago and is still waking up 2x per night, but I can handle that!

I have a friend who has a 1 y/o and is up sooo many times a night and she refuses to do CIO for any length of time. It kills me because she is so tired...I'm like just give in! You aren't abandoning your baby!

@bao - my Lo is 3.5 months and we are going to sleep train at the end of this week. Right now we have to rock him to sleep and he wakes up several times at night and I rock him
Back to sleep. Last week he got sick so to help him get more sleep he is on his tummy and can sleep from 6:30-6:30 and wakes up twice to eat. We know he can't put himself to sleep if we put him on his back in the crib which is why we are going to sleep train. This week in going to work on drowsy but awake in the crib with the swaddle/white noise and document how he does. Did you do complete CIO with no checks? We are thinking of doing the modified CIO with checks but I'm trying to work up the courage. I feel so nervous and sad!

We also put a time limit on crying at night. If she cries more than 10 minutes, she's usually hungry or needs something. Or if she really needs something (or is scared for some reason), she has a more frantic cry that she does.

@JoJoGirl: I usually put a time limit on crying at night? If LO cries for longer than X minutes, I know it's because he's hungry. Normally LO will fuss and then fall right asleep so it's not much of an issue. We didn't do CIO until LO was 7 months old, adjusted age 5.5 months because I wanted to make sure he got all of his feedings.

@JoJoGirl: I was mostly going by actual hours in-between. When she was nursing before bed around 6:15/6:30 and would wake up between 7pm and 11pm I knew there was no way she could be hungry, especially at 5 months old. So then I knew if she woke up after say 11:30pm, there was a good chance she really was hungry. Then if she woke up again after 4:30am (5 hours in-between), I knew again, there was probably a good chance she was hungry. I knew though, waking up 2 hours after a feeding she was just waking up, and knew I was coming in to replace a paci and that was getting to be too much.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: She takes 2 naps a day and they are about 30-60 minutes a piece, so I guess not TOO terrible...but for a 5 month old that seems pretty short. She is pretty happy after her little naps though, so I can't complain...especially since she sleeps so much at night.
