I've wondered this. I started having my bloody show around 7-8 pm, and I had irregular contractions that evening which slowly gained intensity over night. They were still up to 8 min apart all the way until I delivered! He wasn't born until the next morning at 3 am. I feel like I was in labor for at least 24 hours but it's difficult to say. Apparently I didn't start dilating until I arrived at the hospital around 12 noon, so maybe that would be the official start?

I've been saying mine was 4.5 hours, since I woke up at 6am unable to lay back down because it hurt too much, and she was born at 10:40. I was definitely in early labor for at *least* the entire previous night, and my usual BH's had gotten uncomfortable for a while prior to that, so I guess technically I was in some form of labor for about 24 hours. But I only count active labor that was really painful and clearly (in retrospect) actual labor.

@Foodnerd81: @Mrs. Oatmeal: Thanks. My prodormal labor with LO1 was so long and so painful. Funny how my two labors could be so different.

On my birth records from the midwives, my labour 'started' when the contractions got painful. Stage one was the painful contractions, stage 2 was pushing and stage 3 was when baby was born to when the placenta came out. So according to your timeline, you were in prodromal/early labour for quite awhile, then active labour started around 5pm.

You could probably say *active* labor started when they got really painful, so 5 pm. I would call as soon as you had "sensations" the start of early labor. Mine was kind of similar in that it took a long time to actually get painful. So it sounds like I was in labor kind of a long time, but the really painful part wasn't that long.

LO2's labor & delivery last month was really fast & (relatively) easy. LO1's labor lasted for days so everyone I talk to wants to know how long this labor was.

I woke up at 3 am and *knew* labor was coming. I felt the same way with LO1's labor and at no point in between. I was 100% certain.

At 2:30pm I tried out my contraction timer app to get familiar with it. I could time 'sensations' 14 minutes apart. At 3:30pm they were 5 minutes apart, still no pain. I was sitting on the couch alone watching tv and eating cookies. Pretty sure I was timing them according to what I wanted them to be and not according to reality.

At 5:00 the pain went from zero to all the way. I was 10 cm when I got to the hospital around 6:20pm and baby was born at 6:45pm.

So when did labor start? When the pain started? When the contractions were 5 minutes apart? When I first timed contractions?
