I would def ask your SIL to please emphasize that you are not local so to please ship gifts directly to you or get you gift cards. I know it's a little less fun, but hopefully they can be considerate so you don't have to pay to ship stuff home or lug them with you on the plane!

@CupQuakeWalk: Flying....too bad I'm not driving, otherwise I'd throw it all in the car!
@Espion: Good point...gift card encouragement is great, and also what @birdofafeather: said....to ship anything large here (that I'll promise not to open until after the fact), and smaller stuff I can put in my suitcase. I wouldn't even mind having to ship a box or two, but I'm imagining the car seat/pack n' play etc would be expensive to ship.@skibobrown: I'm hoping there will be smaller things to open, if only because people seem to like seeing cute things opened at a shower. I will check a bag (which I don't ordinarily do) so that I can bring stuff home.

Thanks everyone!

We had an out of town shower 3000 miles away from our home. I can't remember what we did exactly. My mom might have asked people to ship large gifts directly to our home, or guests just figured that out. We had plenty of smaller things to unwrap at the shower (and we made sure to leave some extra space in our suitcases), but lots of people just wrote in their cards that they had purchased a larger item that they were going to ship.

I encouraged gift cards. If they really want to get you something, they should ship it to your home. (My family threw me a baby shower that I couldn't even attend. My sister had to mail the gift cards to me!)

My sweet SIL is throwing me a baby shower in my hometown, which will be lovely. However, it's 2,000 miles away from where I live. I'm wondering if anyone who has had an out-of-town shower would care to weigh in about what you did in regards to gifts? Did you let people buy stuff off your registry and just pay to ship it all home? Did you return everything, get a gift card, and re-buy it when you got home? Did you have people ship gifts to your house and put a picture of the gift you received in a card? Encourage people to give gift cards?I'd love any and all ideas from those with experience!
