@Mrs. Sketchbook: Definitely cover, it can attract slugs and bugs. Getting a used one is smart - it'll be covered in mud anyway. I'm thinking about letting DD use small pots that I hardly ever use, then I wouldn't have to worry about rust.

All this time I've been avoiding plastic, and now that's what I'm looking for. It's pretty amusing

@SugarplumsMom: We are in the process of making one for our 2 year old, and I just asked on my local moms FB group for anyone to "donate" a plastic kitchen to me. I would rather use up one that is free and possibly find another cheapo down the road than get a new one. We are putting ours beside a sand box because we don't have a lot of yard, so don't really want the mud. Going to put in some non toxic plants that they can use in their creations, and some river rocks. Will probably get utensils at Goodwill and occasionally buy new ones if they rust, etc.

I wonder if these need to be covered? I know they say to cover sand boxes because cats are attracted to them. I guess they wouldn't be attracted to a muddy area.

DD apparently loves to make mud pies. We only discovered this when I decided to move one of her play stoves outside. She has an indoor play kitchen that basically serves as a storage container for her Play-Doh (she hardly ever cooks in it), but as soon as I took the little stove outside, she can play for hours!

We enjoy gardening and would love to find more outdoor toys for her to get dirty with. All of her kitchen accessories are fabric or wooden. A few metal ones have rusted. We definitely need things that can get and stay wet  I feel like this is an area I've never looked into before. There are tons of options - I'd love to find sturdier brands/products.

So far, I found this Little Tikes plastic sink that splashes water. Are there any other water-friendly kitchen toys out there? Tell me about your LO's mud kitchen.
